Bar Honors New Times Writer Rubin

New Times staff writer Paul Rubin has received the State Bar of Arizona's annual Award of Appreciation. The award is given "in recognition of outstanding service toward creation of a better public understanding of the legal profession, the administration of justice, the judiciary or the legislative process."

The 1995 award was presented June 7 during the annual State Bar Convention in Tucson.

Rubin, a New Times writer for ten years, frequently reports on judicial issues. Last year, he won a coveted Silver Gavel Award from the American Bar Association for his reporting on zero-down bankruptcy attorneys.

"Your competent and fair reporting on issues affecting lawyers and the legal profession and your participation on panel discussions regarding like matters, both at the Annual State Bar Conventions and for other organizations, are greatly appreciated," Bar President Michael D. Kimerer said of Rubin.

He is the first journalist to receive the State Bar award. Previous recipients are: Patricia J. Horgan and Karen E. Osborne (1994), Ken Campbell (1993), Thomas Tso (1992), Dean Paul Bender and Amelia Davis (1991), Sal Quijada and Pauline Urbano King (1990), and Governor Rose Mofford, former U.S. senator Barry Goldwater and KAET-TV Channel 8 (1989).
