In addition to information about and directions to the other stops on the tour, these headquarters will themselves feature tent shows with exhibits of such local artists as Dan Valentine, Becky Joy, Tom Blaney, Lois Wertheimer, Donna Law, Frank Roberts, Jeff George, Larry Cremeens, Tahna Maree and Melissa Spradley.
From these sites, art junkies will have a chance at a rare glimpse behind the scenes at nearly 30 area art studios. Represented in these spaces will be the work of more than 80 artists who, in many cases, will be present and quite prepared to accommodate you if you should wish to take out your checkbook.
Here are five of the better-known artists scheduled for exhibition, and the galleries where you'll find their work:
Bartolomeo Atelier: Twenty-four of the minimalist's newest works, sculpted while he was in Italy, are displayed in his garden at 35014 North 80th Way in Carefree.
Virginia Brooks: The painter shows her colorful landscapes and garden scenes in oil at her studio at 7402 Sundance Trail in Carefree.
Michael D'Ambrosi: The artist's impressive bronze sculptures are exhibited at 6019 East Dolomora in Cave Creek, as are some works by his father, Jasper.
Christopher Heede: 7007 East Rancho Del Oro in Cave Creek is the location of the ceramicist's studio, which features handmade ceramic pillars at the entrance.
Bob Boze Bell: Frequent New Times contributor and Old West iconoclast Bell opens his cluttered studio at 40220 North Old Stage Road in Cave Creek to visitors.
Tours of all these studios, and many others, are free and self-guided. Each studio will have ballots and a ballot box for a "People's Choice Award" in four categories: Best Studio, Best Two-Dimensional Artist, Best Three-Dimensional Artist and Best All-Around Artist. Each comes with a cash prize.
Maps showing the route can be had, also for free, at numerous locations, among them the Boulders Resort, 34631 North Tom Darlington Drive in Carefree; the Carefee/Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce, 748 East Easy Street in Carefree; the Carefree Conference Resort, 37220 North Mule Train Road in Carefree; Harold's Cave Creek Corral, 6895 East Cave Creek Road in Cave Creek; Salon Picasso, 34422 North Scottsdale Road in Scottsdale, in the Terravita Shopping Center; the Safeway at 29834 North Cave Creek Road; and the Walgreens at 29660 North Tatum.
A nice touch: To make spotting them easier, the signs of participating studios will be decorated with the Sonoran Art League logo: an elegant whiptail lizard.
