Tube Talks

Hey! What're you doing sitting there at home watching TV, when you could go to the library and . . . watch TV? Tempe Public Library is hosting a bimonthly program that presents the "White House Millennium Lectures," a series on videotape of talks on a wide array of subjects given last year by various big shots at Bill Clinton's current address. The series is shown from 7 to 9 p.m. every other Tuesday through August 8. Each showing of the tapes is followed by a discussion led by a flesh-and-blood, physically present person of some local eminence in the same field.This week's show, on Tuesday, May 30, for instance, will be "Jazz: An Expression of Democracy," by jazz master Wynton Marsalis. The post-lecture discussion will be led by Dr. Richard Strange. The rest of the series is slated as follows:

June 13: "The Living Past" by Harvard historian Bernard Bailyn; discussion by Senator Harry Mitchell.

June 27: "The Meaning of the Millennium" by University of Chicago theologian Martin Marty; discussion by Dr. Donald Dietz.

July 11: "Imagination and Change" by physicist and author Stephen Hawking; Senator Harry Mitchell, again, leads the talk.

July 25: "Poets Laureate" by Robert Pinsky, the current holder of that title, and former Poets Laureate Robert Hass and Rita Dove; Peter Rennick leads the discussion.

The series, which is presented by the Arizona Humanities Council through a grant, closes on Tuesday, August 8, with "The Perils of Indifference: Lessons From a Violent Country" by Holocaust survivor and writer Elie Wiesel. The guest speaker for the evening is yet to be determined.
