Super Conductor

A Phoenix Symphony Close-Up with Robert Moody

Another year of musical flesh-pressing kicks off when the popular Phoenix Symphony Close-Up returns to Borders Books & Music. The opening speaker in this monthly series is Robert Moody, the symphony's associate conductor.

Most of the musicians who appear at the Close-Ups bring their instruments and play a bit. But since Moody -- though he's a cellist -- doesn't play with the symphony, he'll be bringing something different to the get-together: The maestro, who holds a summer gig as chorus master at Santa Fe Opera, will be singing. To the accompaniment of a string quartet from the Phoenix Symphony Youth Guild Orchestra, Moody will perform Samuel Barber's "Dover Beach."

The event is slated from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, September 11, at Borders Books & Music at Biltmore Fashion Park, 24th Street and Camelback, Suite 200. Admission is free, but seating is limited; there will also be a chance to register for free tickets to the symphony's opening Classics Concert.

The series continues monthly (December excepted) through the end of the concert season. On the current schedule: trumpeter Emery Harveson (October 9); violinist Bruce Wilkinson (November 13); contrabassoonist Eric Ludwig (January 8); a Valentine edition with principal harpist Andrea Stickermeier-Thiele and principal flutist Liz Buck on February 12; violinist Chun-Yi Lu (March 12); and assistant principal flute and piccolo player Brian Gordon (April 16). Rounding out the series on May 14 is principal bassist Michael Kazepides, joined by his wife, Anna Kim Kazepides.
