Diamonds Are Forever

The Arizona Fall League will soon begin

Not ready to give up on baseball yet? It's understandable. Back East, the start of the season in the spring is a sweet harbinger of good weather. That effect is reproduced here by the approach of the Arizona Fall League. The 2000 season gets rolling on Tuesday, October 3. Regarded as a sort of "grad school" for the Bigs, AFL teams will play most days (all Mondays, and Thursday, October 5, excepted) through Sunday, November 19, at the following venues:

Grand Canyon Rafters, at Scottsdale Stadium, 7408 East Osborn in Scottsdale.

Maryvale Saguaros, at Maryvale Baseball Park, 3600 North 51st Avenue.

Mesa Solar Sox, at HoHoKam Park, 1235 North Center in Mesa.

Peoria Javelinas, at Peoria Sports Complex, 16101 North 83rd Street in Peoria.

Phoenix Desert Dogs, at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, 5999 East Van Buren.

Scottsdale Scorpions, also at Scottsdale Stadium.

Opening-day match-ups include: the Desert Dogs and the Javelinas at Peoria, and the Saguaros and the Solar Sox at HoHoKam Park; both games start at 1:05 p.m. The Rafters and Mookie Wilson's Scorpions play at the venue they share, Scottsdale Stadium, at 7:05 p.m. On Wednesday, October 4, the Rafters play the Saguaros at Maryvale at 1:05 p.m.; the Javelinas play the Scorpions at Scottsdale, and the Solar Sox play the Desert Dogs at Phoenix Municipal at 7:05 p.m. For details go to www.majorleaguebaseball.com and click on "Arizona Fall League," or call 480-496-6700.
