Just Think About Baseball

All at once on October 21, Phoenix found itself home to thousands of fair-weather fans, in addition to its usual crop of diehard D-backers. But with the first two games of the World Series sold out at Bank One Ballpark, we have to find ways to channel our fandom. So New Times has put together an agenda for the first stretch of the series, a day-by-day program for those of us who can't get baseball off the brain. You know what they say: If you find yourself getting too excited, just think about baseball.

Saturday: Game One. To keep from feeling left out while still rallying that hometown spirit, go to one of today's Arizona Fall League games, home of Valleywide minor league action. Today's games: Scottsdale at Maryvale (Maryvale Baseball Park: 3600 North 51st Avenue), Phoenix at Grand Canyon (Scottsdale Stadium: 7402 East Osborn) and Peoria at Mesa (HoHoKam Park: 1235 North Center). Games start at 12:05 p.m. You'll be home in time for the real deal. 480-496-6700.

Sunday: Game Two. You can't see it in person, but that's why God made sports bars. This year's Best of Phoenix winner in that category was McDuffy's in Tempe. Seventy-seven screens, no waiting. 230 West Fifth Street. 480-966-5600.

Monday: Team travel day, a time for reflection. Stop by the Arizona Fall League's brand-new Hall of Fame. Bronze plaques are being installed to honor some of the league's heaviest hitters, plus there are banners and retired jerseys from stars of the Scottsdale Scorpions. 7402 East Osborn. 480-496-6700.

Tuesday: The first away game. Before the first pitch, get in the spirit at Home Run Stadium, formerly Robo Pitch, which claims to be the biggest batting-cage facility in the Southwest. Eight cages await, and one buck gets you 20 pitches. 1829 East Main in Mesa. 480-844-0489.

Wednesday: Fourth of seven. Dilute your tension in a massive crowd at America's Original Sports Bar at Arizona Center. Famously cavernous, it's the flagship of the Phoenix Live! eating-and-meeting complex that boasts 32,000 square feet where you can root around -- or root for the home team.
