The Phoenix Jazz Workshop is scheduled to perform on Sunday, March 17, at the Lucky Dragon in Tempe. Showtime is 8 p.m.
Hate Connection: Local album title of the month goes to the ultra-passionate, ultra-pop-friendly guys in Fine China, whose forthcoming sophomore record on the Seattle-based indie label Tooth & Nail is called You Make Me Hate Music. I'd like to think the title's slam is directed at that messianic doofus in Creed, but let's face it: There are innumerable worthy candidates clogging up the arteries of contemporary radio.
Fine China's new album hits the stores on Tuesday, March 26.
Saturday Night Fever: The East Valley's favorite sons, Jimmy Eat World , are confirmed to perform on Saturday Night Live on April 6, a first for any local band since the Gin Blossoms' mid-'90s heyday. The high-profile spot comes at a time when JEW's infectious single, "The Middle," is making inroads on the Billboard pop chart, debuting in the Hot 100 last week at No. 71. The group's eponymously titled 2001 album release, which has reached as high as No. 54 on Billboard, continues to linger in the Top 100 after 22 weeks, currently at No. 96.
