Foul Play

Comedy brings stage fright to the fore

6/12-6/26
"Line! Line! Oh my God!" So goes The Actor's Nightmare by Christopher Durang, a play that stretches a single joke into a one-act about an accountant named George Spelvin who unwittingly finds himself in a play without any memory of having attended a single rehearsal. What follows is a painfully hilarious rummage through the brain of Spelvin as he tries to create a semblance of a performance in a play that is either Noel Coward's Private Lives, Samuel Beckett's Checkmate or Shakespeare's Hamlet, with his co-stars performing in one or all three at the same time. Actor's Nightmare is performed by local troupe Theatre Eclectic at the Herberger Theater Center's Lunchtime Theatre, 222 East Monroe, on Thursday, June 12 as well as June 17-19 and 24-26. Doors open at 11:40 a.m. and shows begin at 12:10 p.m. Tickets, $5, are available at the door. For information call 602-254-7399, extension 106. - Quetta Carpenter

Four Humorists

Comedy tour makes light of laughter

- Fri 6/13
In light of famed thinker Edward De Bono's contention that "Humor is by far the most significant activity of the human brain," the modestly named "It's Just Comedy" tour seems particularly humble. Featuring four cutting-edge comedians -- Arnez J, Rickey Smiley, Katt Williams (a.k.a. Katt N Da Hatt) and Kyle -- the showcase spins into the Celebrity Theatre, 440 North 32nd Street, on Friday, June 13. Doors open at 6:30 for the 8 p.m. all-ages show in the round. Tickets range from $27.50 to $45.50; call 602-267-1600, extension 1, or log on to www.ticketmaster.com to order.- Jill Koch
