"Additional trial proceedings before a jury are expected to take longer and require more attorney preparation," the budget report said.
Last September, the County Attorney's Office asked for $2 million more per year because of Ring, and the county's indigent defense agencies, sheriff's office and Superior Court asked for $8 million between them.
But Ring already has cost far more than those agencies anticipated. For example, the Office of Court-Appointed Counsel has spent almost twice the $5 million it was budgeted, according to its chief, Mark Kennedy.
"Ringhas absolutely killed us," says Kennedy. "We've got to appoint two attorneys and a mitigation specialist to the cases coming back [for resentencing], and, unfortunately, the new cases don't stop coming up. This has been a very difficult year."
