Sizzle Learn

Kids beat the heat at the Heard

7/19-8/9
School's out for summer, but kids still love to learn as long as education is disguised as vacation fun -- and there's no homework. Sizzlin' Summer Saturdays at the Heard Museum is the perfect example. Every week through August 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the program focuses on a different theme related to one of the geographic regions covered in "Every Picture Tells a Story," an interactive exhibition examining the meanings behind symbols and designs in Native American artwork. For July 19, "Set Sail! Rocky Ocean Northwest Coast" includes a canoe button blanket craft project, performances by Nosotros at noon and 2 p.m., a book signing and short skits from Barbara McGowan, author of G Is for Grand Canyon, plus free treats and a souvenir bag. The first 100 kids to show up even get a special gift. With paid adult admission, $7, it's a free day of fun for kids age 12 and under. To find out more, call 602-252-8848 or visit www.heard.org.

SHOOTING STARS

Kids score during the summer

7/21-7/25
A game of H-O-R-S-E at an outdoor basketball court this time of year could be lethal, so pony up and send your kids to Shooting Camp, Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25, in the air-conditioned gym at Tempe's Kiwanis Park Recreation Center. The cost is $60 for second- through eighth-graders and $80 for high schoolers, a small price to arm your offspring with a shooting edge and to rebut the claim, "There's nothing to doooooooo." Hurry -- advance registration is required. Kiwanis Park is located at 6111 South All America Way in Tempe. For more information, call 480-350-5201. - Kim Toms

Have Toys, Will Travel

Explore the adventures of Dora

7/23-7/27
It's a small world for Dora the Explorer, who's taking her Nick Jr. show on the road. Hailed as the first family theater production to star a Latina heroine, Dora the Explorer Live!: Search for the City of Lost Toys follows the intrepid 7-year-old's journeys through jungles, beaches and rain forests. The interactive show finds the bilingual Dora teaching the audience Spanish words and phrases -- and the audience helping her unravel problems and puzzles. Dora's toy story debuts at the Dodge Theatre, 400 West Washington, on Wednesday, July 23, and continues through Sunday, July 27. Tickets are $17, $22 and $29; see www.ticketmaster.com or call 480-784-4444 to purchase. - Jill Koch
