That Sinking Feeling

A singing, dancing Titanic hits the Herberger

8/8-8/24
Like Celine Dion's histrionic heart, the sail of the century goes on, as Valley Youth Theatre brings Titanic, the Broadway musical, to town. Though setting disaster to song may seem a strange strategy, the show scored an impressive five Tony Awards after its 1997 debut. Audiences flocked to the show, undeterred by its cut-and-(ahem)-dry story and decidedly unhappy ending. After a buoyant first act ("Everyone is bursting with emotion, dancing as we cross the mighty ocean"), the passengers go down singing ("A few of them will hang there from the railings as, one by one, they'll drop away! More than 250 feet they will fall. And after that, I cannot say."). The boat show opens Friday, August 8, and continues through August 24 at downtown's Herberger Theater Center, 222 East Monroe, with performances at 7 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 2 and 7 p.m. Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $13 to $17; call 602-252-8497 for reservations. - Jill Koch

Children explore their artistic side

8/8-9/21
Summer camp doesn't necessarily equal mosquito bites and S'mores. For the creative young attendees of Scottsdale Center for the Arts' summer program, camp means making wire sculptures, batiks, collages and solar prints. See "Cool Kids Camp Creations" in Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art's Young @ Art Gallery through September 21. Call 480-994-2787. - Michele Laudig
