WWE slams at AWA

Sun 8/24
This weekend is World Wrestling Entertainment's latest installment of the SummerSlam pay-per-view event. One of WWE's biggest annual mega-bouts, it features wrestlers from both RAW and SmackDown!. But for around the price of a pay-per-view purchase, you can roll on down to America West Arena and experience it firsthand. This year's SummerSlam will have no shortage of drama -- nothing less than you'd expect from Vince McMahon and his cronies. To wit: After Eric Bischoff defeated Shane McMahon on RAW several weeks ago, Bischoff thought he'd seen the last of McMahon but then inadvertently signed on to battle him again at SummerSlam. Also, in the biggest grudge match of the event, Rob Van Dam (affectionately known as the Big Red Machine) will take on former tag-team partner Kane, who was recently unmasked after years of making like an enigma. SummerSlam kicks off at 4:45 p.m. Sunday, August 24. For ticket info, call 480-784-4444. - Brendan Joel Kelley

Answer the call of the wild during the Coyote Walk

Fri 8/22
Walk by the light of a silvery moon at the Riparian Institute's Coyote Walk, 8 p.m. Friday, August 22. A crescent moon makes for starry skies and encounters with not only coyotes, but also bats, scorpions, and the odd insomniac heron fishing for a snack. It's peaceful out there (unless you're prey), and institute director Scott Anderson knows where the wild things are.

So what do coyotes do all night? Same as us -- scare up dinner, hang with the boys and howl a little on payday. The cost for the walk is $3 per person, reservations recommended. Meet behind the Southeast Regional Library at the corner of Greenfield and Guadalupe roads in Gilbert. For more information, call 480-503-6744 or 602-696-1195. - Kim Toms

Summerfest makes a racquet

Sat 8/23
Back in the early '80s, the calling cards of speed, skill and nonstop action hearkened the beginning of racquetball's glory days. Times and tastes change, but the sport has always maintained a loyal following among those who prefer their racquet sports with a little more attitude and all the unpredictability four walls, a ceiling and a little blue ball can provide. Make your play for racquetball supremacy at the Summerfest Racquetball Tournament at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 23, at Sports Club at City Square, 4000 North Central, Suite 110. A continuous play "shuffle format" separates the contenders from the pretenders, with awards for the top three finishers and the culinary gift of Honey Bear's Bar-B-Q to be shared among all participants. The entrance fee is $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers. For details call 602-285-2929 or visit www.sportsclubcitysquare.com.- Craig Wallach
