Desert Stages reimagines Princess and the Pea

It just might be the sleeper hit of the season. Starting this Friday, Desert Stages Theatre presents Once Upon a Mattress, Broadway's take on Hans Christian Andersen's Princess and the Pea. The musical comedy finds Dauntless the Drab desiring to be the prince formerly known as single, but his domineering mother rejects a procession of prospective princesses. The mattresses are stacked against Winnifred the Woebegone -- can she pass the queen's test of princess authenticity, or is the fresh prince destined for a life of royal pain? Once Upon a Mattress runs Friday, August 22, through September 21 at Scottsdale's Desert Stages Theatre, 8473 East McDonald. Showtime is 1 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, and 7:30 p.m. on August 22, 23, 29 and 30. Tickets are $12; reservations are recommended. Call 480-483-1664.- Jill Koch
