Impact Zone shows wrestlers the ropes

Sat 8/30
Impact Zone Wrestling, the state's only full-service training school for professional wrestlers, celebrates its first anniversary at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday, August 30, with a full card of local wrestlers at its Phoenix facility. For $8, fans can check out the next generation of pro wrestling heroes, who train at the school for at least a year before being shopped to the pro wrestling monoliths. Saturday's anniversary card features Navajo Warrior battling "Hawaiian Lion" John Williams, a former NCAA wrestling champion, for the heavyweight title. "Basically, all of our students will be coming on," says IZW co-owner GQ Gallo, who will fight in a taped-fist match against IZW commissioner C.C. Starr. Smooth Moves

Restore your health in Scottsdale

Mon 9/1
The "gentle art" of tai chi has as many different incarnations as Anna Nicole Smith. But the Taoist version of tai chi has been called the most beneficial, given its strong focus on restoring health to the body and mind. On Monday, September 1, at 6 p.m., the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Arizona holds a free open-house demonstration of this art of movement and its 108 positions. The class is free, and gives you a chance to try it for yourself. The Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 12211 North 82nd Street (at Cactus) in Scottsdale, hosts the event. Call 480-229-0450 for more information. - Maidi Terry

Go With the Flow

Hikers follow Horton Creek

Sat 8/30
Water is good for what ails you . . . in this case, summer. The recreation therapists at Gilbert Parks and Recreation want you to say "ahhhh" when you hit the trail on Saturday, August 30, for an eight-mile hike along Horton Creek Trail near the Mogollon Rim. Follow the spring-fed creek toward its source, past little waterfalls and a fern-bordered pool. Imagine -- running water that's crisp and clean, with no chlorine. The creek not only refreshes the fishies at Tonto Fish Hatchery downstream, it'll do wonders for your soul. Go restore yourself and your faith in August. The cost is $15 per person. Hikers meet 7 a.m. at the Gilbert Parks and Rec building, 119 North Gilbert Road. Participants will carpool, so go prepared to drive. To register, call 480-503-6200.- Kim Toms
