Interested in artworks, but not really sure how art works? Let Steven Yazzie paint you a picture on Monday, December 1, when the local artist takes the podium at the FirstMondays Art Salon. Aiming to acquaint audiences with artists and the creative process, the free public program encourages questions and discussion. In this month's installment, Yazzie expounds on the vision that has inspired works such as Fear of a Red Planet, the 8-foot-by-160-foot mural he created for the Heard Museum.

Mexico's reigning rock gods come to the Valley

Wondering who that is staring at you on the Hennessy billboards? Feel like you're looking into the eye of a jaguar? Well, you are. The cognac model also sings for Jaguares, Mexico's monster rockeros. On Sunday, November 30, in two separate events, you have a chance to meet him, or at least see him in concert. First, at 7 p.m., the band performs an all-ages show at Marquee Theatre, 730 North Mill in Tempe. Call Ticketmaster, 480-784-4444, for tickets, $40. Then, Saul Hernández and mates will be at Club Downtown, 710 North Central, for an official after-party until 3 a.m. Tickets are $10. Signed CDs and a guitar will be raffled off, all for a good cause: school uniforms for underprivileged kids. - Dan Cortez

Rushmoreand The Royal Tenenbaums became cult films as much for their retro-tinged soundtracks as for their quirky characters. For Wes Anderson's next film, we suggest he look into the music of the Slow Poisoners. Singer Andrew Poisoner describes the group's sound as "a mix of David Bowie, Elvis Costello and Hank Williams." Indeed, Poisoner does a great folk/early glam Bowie in the song "Mama, Don't Leave Me Lyin' Here Bleeding on the Floor." "Doll House Parade" oozes Kinks charisma, and other tracks on the Slow Poisoners' latest album, Days of the Soft Break, reveal shades of the Beatles at their most psychedelic.
