In the lexicon of four-letter words, few are cooler than "jazz." And while, as a music form, jazz is more likely to be associated with cities such as New Orleans or Chicago, the desert is proving to be fertile ground for the genre as well. The biggest names in Valley jazz make a weekend of it at the 21st Annual Glendale Jazz & Blues Festival, Friday, April 16, through Sunday, April 18, at Murphy Park, 58th Avenue and Glendale. Acts include Big Pete Pearson, Cold Shott and the Hurricane Horns, Carvin Jones, Margo Reed, Swing Tips, and Sistah Blue. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. For a schedule, call 623-930-2963, or visit www.glendaleaz.com/festivals. -- Craig Wallach
