It's hard enough to discover one's personal identity, much less develop one that represents an entire culture. In the eighth annual "Arte Latino en la Ciudad" exhibition, on display at the Phoenix Center Gallery, 214 East Moreland, eight artists tackle their issues individually and end up coming together in a communal theme. Included in the exhibition, which runs through May 25, are works by local painters Joanne Ramos (a portrait of Frida Kahlo) and Pia Meringer (Indian of the Andes in oil), as well as pieces from ceramicist Gil Quintanilla and sculptor Roberto Reveles. Screen and stage actor honored in Tucson

Philip Seymour Hoffman could be the Kevin Bacon of the 21st century -- in Tucson, at least. Thanks to a friend of a friend of a friend, The Loft art house cinema (3233 East Speedway) bypassed about two degrees of separation in bringing the "most talented actor on stage and screen" to town for his own tribute and mini film festival, Thursday, May 13, through Saturday, May 15. Screenings of four Hoffman films -- including Magnolia, which kicks off the tribute at 5:30 p.m. Thursday -- are followed by Q&A sessions with the actor himself. General admission is $10. In the marketplace of artistic expression, don't look for any blue-light specials from the Raethier Corp, a trio of local artisans who'll make you think for the aesthetic value you desperately crave. "There's definitely an intent for us to be understood," says Rob Kilman, who, along with fellow chairmen of the bored Tim Severson and Jason Landers, makes up Raethier. "But our work is completely open to interpretation."

The eighth and final installment of the film series CenterPoint, at 8 p.m. Friday, May 14, at Paper Heart Gallery, 750 Grand Avenue, concludes the group's narrative dreamscape, exploring issues of self-knowledge and consumerism. Admission is $5. Call 602-262-2020 for more information.-- Joe Watson
