Attention mortals: Steer clear of Chandler this weekend, as the suburb will be overrun by vampires, werewolves and similar hellspawn . . . at least in the minds of the perverse playmakers at Tinhare 2004. Put away the pitchforks and hang up on Buffy and Willow, because the gathering -- from Friday, June 4, through Sunday, June 6, at the San Marcos Golf Resort and Conference Center (One San Marcos Place) -- is dedicated to a beastly bestiary of live-action role play. Six different LARP game settings feature bloodsuckers, demons and assorted fairies. Players act out grand and gothic story lines set in an alternate universe where the supernatural comes naturally. No one will get medieval on your ass, but they might challenge you to rock-paper-scissors, in combat situations. Classes will help players develop character concepts and acting skills.
The Buckwheat Stops Here
Zydeco brings Creole sounds to the Rhythm Room
Provided the requisite Mardi Gras beads will be thrown about like raw meat to gators, the only New Orleans touch missing from the Buckwheat Zydeco show on Sunday, June 6, at the Rhythm Room, 1019 East Indian School, will be the fiendishly forward cameramen of Girls Gone Wild. Still, Buck and his legendary 25-year-old band play such fine Creole-inspired rock and jazz that the Jole Blons in attendance might rip off their tops in exaltation anyway. The show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance, $23 day of the show. Call 602-265-4842. --Joe Watson
"Adults Only" exhibit is no cheap peep show
There's plenty of T 'n' A on display at the seventh annual "Adults Only" exhibition at 11 East Ashland Gallery, but David Cook, who runs the gallery, swears it's not pornography. "You could bring your kids here," he says. "The only reason I made it 'adults only' is because I didn't want to cater to underage [kids]. . . . I didn't want people thinking I was some kind of pervert." No worries there, since the work is fairly tame, emphasizing the nude rather than sex (but there's plenty of that, too). If you're a deviant hoping for something a little more down and dirty, stay home and watch a porn. The peep show runs through Saturday, June 5. The gallery, located at 11 East Ashland Avenue, is open on First Fridays, every Wednesday and Saturday, and by appointment. Call 602-257-8543. -- C. Murphy Hebert
