Chronic Future

Lines in My Face
(Interscope)

Lines in My Face might seem an odd album title for a band whose members' mean age isn't old enough to drink at a bar, but Chronic Future has already been around the block a few times at this point. On this, the band's third full-length release, Chronic Future has finally found purchase on the delicate balance of styles it embraces. Produced by Sean Beavins, who's worked with Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson, Lines in My Face isn't a rap-rock album, but rather a monster rawk record that happens to have Mike Busse squawking rhymes over the tracks.

One of the reasons this album works is that the band has three lead vocalists -- Busse, guitarist Ben Collins, and bassist Brandon Lee -- who keep the songs from becoming static. "Stop Pretending" starts sounding like a slick emo track until Busse starts spitting rhymes in his staccato cadence. It's a formula that operates throughout the record -- the band nearly sounds like Jimmy Eat World at several spots, but the leveraged infusion of rapping sets it apart from JEW's legion of imitators.
