Smooth operator: Soul legend Al Green makes a comeback.

He rose from humble beginnings to conquer the pop music charts, indulged in all the excesses that celebrity affords, walked away at the height of his fame to embrace religion, and then, years later, made a triumphant return to the mainstream music world. Ladies and gentlemen . . . the Mase story! Just kidding. The renowned Reverend Al Green has apparently gotten the okay from God and his congregation down at the Full Gospel Tabernacle (his church in Memphis, where he preaches and sings nearly every Sunday) to sing about earthly pleasures once again. Though Green has mostly recorded gospel music since the late '70s -- when he took the infamous hot grits episode and a near-calamitous fall from a Cincinnati stage as signs to join the ministry -- last year's I Can't Stop was a marvelous return to the secular scene. His voice is still magnificent, his tunes are still stirring; put simply, he's one of the greatest soul singers ever, and this is a show not to be missed.
