Coleman gets in on "Dry Heat"

MON 8/2
If laughter truly is the best medicine, Gary Coleman just might be the cure for cancer. No confirmation on this, but we even hear that thoughts of Arnold Drummond are directly linked to lower cholesterol levels and speedier recovery from gastrointestinal bypass surgery. So the organizers of the "Dry Heat Comedy All-Stars" showcase -- which runs in conjunction with the "Dry Heat Golf Classic" -- at the Dodge Theatre, 400 West Washington, apparently knew what they were doing when they booked the former California gubernatorial candidate. With Coleman on board (no slight to the other 20 comedians -- including Jackie Flynn, Gary Muledeer and Will Shriner -- four magicians, and trio of music acts on the bill), we foresee quite the booty for the show's beneficiaries, The Gift of Life, which helps sick kids get the heart operations they need, and Valley Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Showtime is 7 p.m. Monday, August 2. Call 480-784-4444 for tickets, $20 to $30.50. See www.dryheatclassic.com for details. - Joe Watson

FOLIAGE AGAIN!

It takes a potted plant -- a man-eating potted plant, that is -- to get spineless Seymour to grow some balls in the Maricopa Community College production of Little Shop of Horrors, beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 29, at Phoenix Theatre, 100 East McDowell. Tickets to the show, through August 7, are $15. Call 480-461-7503. -- Joe WatsonHams on Wry

There's nothing like the aroma of deli-fresh meats to inspire the inner rumblings of a spoken-word artist. Or maybe we're just hungry. Nonetheless, AZ Kinders, 130 East University in Tempe, hosts the Incubator's Ball Spoken Word Slam on Friday, July 30, from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. Admission is $4. Call 480-236-0339. -- Joe Watson
