Paper Heart hosts W's "Farewell Party"

 Sat 8/28
Silver-tongued politicos love speaking in glittering generalities, spewing their easily digestible catch phrases like, "I'm reporting for duty," or, "Moving America forward." Local activist Jeff Falk has another catch phrase, one that communicates the message behind the "Farewell Party for George W," on Saturday, August 28, at the Paper Heart, 750 Grand Avenue. "Have you seen those tee shirts that say ÔAnybody But Bush'? That's the spirit of our show," says Falk. "In other words, if the main choice is Kerry, then so be it." Fair enough. But have you heard about those other tees making the rounds, Jeff? You know, the one that says, "I Bet You'll Vote This Time, Hippie," needling those who prefer to pontificate rather than putting pen to paper, come Election Day.

Probably so, considering Falk and the rest of the Committee to De-Elect have arranged for a voter registration drive at the event, which will serve as a backdrop to the dozen or so musicians, entertainers and performance artists who'll enthrall Bushwhackers and Nader-haters alike by skewering and lampooning "Li'l G."

As for Falk's own sound bite for our commander in chief: "You've had your four years, you haven't done a very good job, so you're fired. Let someone else get a chance to screw it up." The electoral dysfunction starts at 8 p.m. Admission is $5. Call 602-262-2020 or see www.thepaperheart.com. --Benjamin Leatherman

Fashionistas dress up Myst

Sun 8/29
Backstage is brought onstage at the Salon & Style Tour kicking off at Myst (formerly Sanctuary Nightclub), 7340 East Shoeman Lane in Scottsdale, on Sunday, August 29. Clothing and accessory designers team up with hair stylists and makeup artists to showcase the seldom-seen work of fashion prep. "I've seen too many events with just fashion or just hair styles," says Benjamin Moline, owner of Superstar Entertainment, who personally scoured the Valley's salons for participants. Dolce Salon & Spa of Chandler, first-place winners of two previous locks-exclusive competitions, will be among the many local teams to watch at the show, which starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 by calling 866-970-7710, or $15 at the door.
