Mopery at Sail Inn

Stefascope spins old and new school

Hirsute anti-fashionista DJ Stefascope is back on the scene for the first time in years, hosting his own night, Mopery at the Sail Inn in Tempe (26 South Farmer Avenue). Stefascope is one-half of the Cute Lil DJs (complementing My Friend Andy, who calls Portland home now), the duo that got the much-missed Arizona Roadhouse's Tuesday hip-hop nights off the ground.

Stefascope covers a lot of ground with his record crates, kicking out old-school gangsta rap alongside new-skool underground jams, with some classic rock and maybe a track or two from anti-comedian Neil Hamburger. "You might even hear some Dire Straits' 'Walk of Life,'" he muses.

But what the hell is Mopery anyway? According to Revenge of the Nerds, it's the act of exposing oneself to the blind -- this is the explanation Stefascope offers. Actually, it's an antiquated criminal charge, for walking down the street with no clear destination or purpose. "Yeah, that works pretty well too," Stefascope says. His Mopery goes off at 10 p.m. Mondays, and there's no cover charge.
