Achtung, baby: U2 tribute band plays The Venue

Thu 10/7
As long as U2 continues to churn out rock anthems, the guys in tribute band Elevation have a bright future ahead. So bright, in fact, that Elevation front man Dan Burrow -- a.k.a. "Danno," a.k.a. Bono onstage -- has invested a few thousand dollars in Bulgari shades, à la the real Bono's sunglasses of choice. "I get 'em from a guy in Canada. I've been through a few pairs. It completes the illusion," says Burrow (pictured, left, with Bono in 2001), who's been a U2 fan for more than 20 years, from his home in St. Louis. "The guy in Canada's working on a new pair for me, some Dolce & Gabbanas Bono's wearing nowadays." The new shades might not be ready in time for Elevation's Thursday, October 7, show at The Venue of Scottsdale, 7117 East Third Avenue -- or for the U2 convention in L.A. on October 10 -- but Elevation's already got U2's latest single, "Vertigo," just released on September 24, worked into its two-and-a-half-hour set. For tickets, $25 to $35, see www.maesche.com. -- Joe Watson

Song and Trance

Penny for your thoughts, nickel for your neck

10/13-10/23
Even in the "here today, gone today" world of entertainment, it's better to suck blood than to suck ass, which may be one reason that vampires are such an intriguing part of pop culture lore. Feed upon the fanged frenzy by catching a performance of Scorpius Dance Theatre's A Vampire Tale, Wednesdays through Saturdays, beginning October 13, through October 23 at Phoenix Little Theatre, 100 East McDowell. The play follows a woman's search for immortality, and Scorpius artistic director Lisa Starry promises the play will "unleash your senses, tempt your dark side, and haunt your dreams." Right-Wing Nuts

Republican stand-up comics

10/12-10/13
Republicans aren't known for their comedic talents. Okay, we'll give 'em a point for Zell Miller at the GOP convention back in August. But as standup comics? It's a bit of an oxymoron. Don't tell that to Eric Peterkofsky, the right-wing producer and creator of "The Right Stuff Conservative Comedy Tour," which serves up anti-Kerry, um, laughs/propaganda at the Tempe Improv, 930 East University, on Tuesday, October 12, and Wednesday, October 13. "We're opinionated, but we're not vicious," Peterkofsky says. "We don't think Kerry is the devil. We don't think he's stupid. We just don't agree with his positions. Sometimes he doesn't even agree with his own positions." The bill includes "Big Daddy" Jeff Wayne, Tony Robinson (a self-described "black anarchist"), Chris Warren, and Arizona native Eric Lopez. The pro-Bush bash begins at 8 p.m. both nights. Tickets are $17. Call 480-921-9877. --Joe Watson
