Dead Heads

Ten bucks to pay your respects

Fri 10/22
There's no need to fear the reaper at this Fiesta de los Muertos -- or Day of the Dead Party for those gringos who aren't hip to the lingo. This shindig at 3121 East 27th Place on Friday, October 22, will have live music by Clown Band and Buddhatech, as well as fire performers including Flam Chen, a pyrotechnic theater troupe that specializes in swinging burning stuff around, swallowing fire and various other feats of flame. The party's also a benefit for the All Souls Procession, a community parade in Tucson on Sunday, November 7, that honors the dead and celebrates Mexican culture. The annual procession relies on private donations to survive, so contributions of $10 will be accepted at the party. The 18-and-older festivities begin at 8 p.m. and partygoers should come early since space is limited, and those tardy will be turned away. Costumes are encouraged but not mandatory. Hooked on Classics

We like the cars that make the wallet go boom

Sat 10/23
Of the five stages of automobile envy, the most rewarding by far is "acceptance." Indeed, coming to terms with the fact that our lives will most likely always be more Geo Metro than Jaguar is the first step in being able to enjoy the classics up close. The next step is embracing the more than 30 rare and exotic vintage race cars and 70 Ferraris on display at the kick-off event of the 2004 Gauthier Classic Car Rally, Saturday, October 23, from 7 a.m. to noon in front of Jewelry by Gauthier, 4211 North Marshall Way in Scottsdale. Proceeds benefit the families of fallen police officers and firefighters throughout the state. Admission is free. For details, call Keith Sterling at 480-367-1112. --Craig Wallach

Comic book aficionados have a reason to come out of their basements (a.k.a. "the vault") and get some sun, as Atomic Comics presents its first annual Atomic Con, on Saturday, October 23, at all four Valley locations. (Even the "Official Marvel Comics Spider-Man" will be swinging by for the con). The other locations are at 10215 North 28th Drive, 4537 East Cactus Road, and 3155 West Chandler Boulevard. Call 1-800-332-9027 or see www.atomiccomics.com for times and a complete list of attendees. -- Benjamin Leatherman
