Balls Out!

The volleyball's in gay league's court at Steele Indian School Park

11/29-11/30
Marketing jingles, every sports franchise has got one. With the Suns, it's "Working hard, playing harder." Feh. The D-Backs? They dared ask "Is it a part of you?" Hardly. Arizona Gay Volleyball's war cry? "Balls, Sand, and Sweat." Now that's a slogan. Not only is it laced with double entendre, it perfectly describes the spike-blocking action we'll witness at this week's AZGV playoffs at Steele Indian School Park, 300 East Indian School. On Monday, November 29, the six top teams in the league's six-man division, including the Pink Tornados and Fierce Ruling Divas, face off in best-of-three, single-elimination action, while the leaders in the four-man division (like the Apollo Aces and Jessie's Girls) engage in similar competition on Tuesday, November 30. Winners get gift certificates and next season's registration fees waived, while cellar-dwellers like the Cockblockers and the Manimals will have to wait until next year. Dig in at 7 each night. Gluttons for Punishment

Turkey-day trot with Arizona Road Racers

Thu 11/25
Admit it: Elevated cholesterol levels and the bulge above your belt threaten to ruin the traditional Thanksgiving feast. Reclaim the holiday with a preemptive morning run in the Arizona Road Racers Thanksgiving Day Classic. The starter's gun goes off at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, November 25, at Thunderbird Park, 59th Avenue and Pinnacle Peak Road in Glendale. For serious runners, there are 10-mile and 8K races; others should opt for the two-mile fun run. As you slather extra gravy on your turkey afterward, you'll be glad you did. ZooLights go on again

11/25-1/9
How do Phoenicians turn winter into wonderland? We call up a blizzard of light that shimmers and gleams and bathes the landscape in silvery white. (Uh, if it crunches underfoot, we did it wrong.) From 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, November 25, through January 9, the Phoenix Zoo flips the switch and stays open evenings to display ZooLights, the annual lighted-up-like-Broadway creature feature. Join the flurry of holiday visitors strolling and trolling for a glimpse at otters after hours, monkeys making mischief and zebras forgoing their zzzz's. New to view this year: Night Eyes, a waddle of nocturnal critters that gaze back. Admission is $6 for advance tickets (available online and at Fry's supermarkets) and $7 at the gate. Parking is free. The Phoenix Zoo captivates the human animal at 455 North Galvin Parkway next to Papago Park. Call 602-273-1341 or visit www.phoenixzoo.org. -- Kim Toms
