Miller Time

Feel the Impact at the Orpheum

Sun 11/28
There once was a time when silly things like the time of year and the weather announced the beginning of ski season. That was until 1949, the year Warren Miller released his first ski-related epic. In the more than half a century since, his work has served as both a veritable alarm clock for ski enthusiasts the world over and a cinematic lift ticket for skiers of all ages and abilities to experience the world's most stunning and challenging runs. Ski season and those who revel in it receive their official yearly wake-up call when Warren Miller Entertainment presents its 55th annual feature, Warren Miller's Impact, on Sunday, November 28, at the Orpheum Theatre, 203 West Adams. Showtimes are 5 and 8 p.m.

Mind-blowing cinematography that puts you square in the action is the order of the day for every Miller epic, and this time around, ski legends such as Miller favorites Glen Plake, Chris Anthony and Charlotte Moats tear it up on a worldwide excursion that takes the viewer from the slopes of Alaska, Colorado and Mexico to the peaks of Chamonix, France.

Tickets are $17 for individuals and $16 apiece for groups of eight or more. Call the Phoenix Civic Plaza box office at 602-262-7272 or visit www.warrenmiller.com.

Kenyon signs Night Play in Tempe

Wed 12/1
Meshing the genres of good ol'-fashioned sword-and-sorcery stories with tawdry tales of romance, à la The Stud or The Bitch, is akin to being the genius who put peanut butter and chocolate together. "Why didn't I think of that?" you're saying while slapping yourself on the side of the head. Well, someone finally did: Sherrilyn Kenyon is the author of Night Play (A Dark-Hunter Novel), the tale of an overweight shop owner who falls in love with a hunted, gorgeous werewolf. Kenyon, one of the top writers in the so-called "paranormal romance" genre, will sign Night Play at 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 1, at the Book Connection, 6434 South McClintock in Tempe. Call 480-820-2953.Marc Siegel
