Low Millions

Ex-Girlfriends
(Manhattan)

About five years ago, Adam Cohen, son of Leonard, released a pleasantly forgettable disc of jazz-tinged singer-songwriter material and got slammed for not being more like his father. That won't be a problem this time. While Cohen writes the songs, Low Millions sounds like a rock band now, and the music is delivered with an optimistic pop sheen that his dad would never attempt.

There are times when Cohen sounds strikingly like his father, and hearing that familiar low growl riding a bright folk-rock track, as it does on "Mockingbird," is startling. But the most startling thing is the creative leap Cohen has taken since his debut. The tunes here soar with aching harmonies and sparkling melodies that place him closer in style to Rufus Wainwright than his famous dad. "Eleanor," "Here She Comes," "Hey Jane" and several other tunes here are gems, thoughtful, mature pop tunes that sound better with each listen -- the kind of songs that can build a lasting career.
