These Beavers are anything but sloppy. Sure, Oregon State started the 2004 season by posting a dismal 1-4 record (including getting walloped 49-7 by Cal-Berkeley in October), but head coach Mike Riley turned the team's fortunes around, and OSU won five of the next six and clinched a berth to the Insight Bowl on Tuesday, December 28, at Bank One Ballpark, 401 East Jefferson. On the other end of the gridiron is the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, who'll be seeking to avenge getting bitch-slapped by the boys from Corvallis, Oregon, 41-9, in the 2000 Fiesta Bowl. Only this time around, the gold-helmeted goons will have to do it without the services of head coach Tyrone Willingham (who was shitcanned in November), and will instead be led to gridiron glory by defensive coordinator Kent Baer. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $10 to $50. Call 480-784-4444 or see www.ticketmaster.com. -- Benjamin Leatherman

Devils in Disguise?
Hoops Classic at ASU
With the exception of a 2003 NCAA Tournament berth that already seems a lifetime ago, Arizona State's men's basketball team has spent the better part of forever playing the role of maroon-and-gold-headed stepchild to Lute Olson's crew down south. If early season results are an indicator of where the '04-'05 season might be headed, however, coach Rob Evans finally might have a squad interested in bridging the gap. Catch All-American force Ike Diogu, JC transfer Bryson Krueger, and the rest of the Sun Devils in action as they host the annual ASU Hoops Classic, Tuesday, December 28, and Wednesday, December 29, at Wells Fargo Arena, 600 East Stadium Drive in Tempe. The tourney field includes Valparaiso, Penn State and Long Island. For details and ticket information, call 480-965-2381 or visit www.thesundevils.collegesports.com. -- Craig Wallach
