If old-school metal fans view Soulfly as once-removed from singer/guitarist/songwriter Max Cavalera's earlier band Sepultura, now they can view Soulfly as once-removed from itself. With its fourth album, Prophecy, released in the spring of last year, Cavalera reassembled the band with all-new members handpicked from Ill Niño and Primer 55, plus ex-Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson sitting in for a good chunk of the album. The lineup change seems to have cured Cavalera's need for too many guest players on albums, but thankfully he hasn't abandoned the exotic instrumentation approach that lends each track on Prophecy a distinctive flavor -- although it's uncertain whether he'll seek to duplicate the album's "apocalyptic horns" and Serbian Gypsies on the concert stage. Keep on a sharp lookout in case he whips out his most alien instrument change -- bagpipes made of sheepskin. It would be a shame to get up for a bladder-letting and miss that. And now that death metal is all the rage, it might make sense to reestablish where the rage came from in the first place, with co-headliners Morbid Angel. C'mon, are you gonna show up late for a band that promises "Cleansed in Pestilence (Blade of Elohim)"? Hmm?
