Crunch Time

All that and a bag of chips at the Salsa Challenge

SAT 4/23
When it comes to the Tostitos Southwest Salsa Challenge, these chips crunch some high numbers. "We have 63 contestants, and some of them enter more than one salsa," says Mary Masters, the event organizer. "For each recipe, they have to make 13 gallons of salsa." That's more than 819 gallons, folks. Good thing Tostitos is donating more than 2,500 pounds of dippin' chips. The salsa showdown takes place at Scottsdale Stadium, 7408 East Osborn, and is expected to draw more than 20,000 people, which translates to approximately 200,000 taste buds. And if a spicy salsa should sear any of them? "You can get a real nice margarita with fresh fruit," says Masters. "We always sell more than 5,000 margaritas." There will also be four live bands, and attendees can vote for their favorite salsa for a dollar a ballot. The battle rages from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 23. Admission is $10. Proceeds benefit the Hemophilia Association. Call 602-955-3947 or visit www.salsachallenge.com. -- Niki D'Andrea
