Scars on Ice

A little puck-me-up at Alltel Ice Den

5/27-5/30
One thing's for sure about the ongoing NHL lockout: Neither the owners nor the players at the heart of this ridiculous impasse will ever be mistaken for Mensa members. And while the sporting public at large has responded to the impasse with a collective yawn, that whimpering in the corner is the sound of diehard hockey fans in need of a hard-core fix. Fear not, puckheads, for if the pros won't do it, the amateurs will at the 18th annual Arizona Hockey Classic, Friday, May 27, through Monday, May 30, at the Alltel Ice Den, 9375 East Bell in Scottsdale. Seventeen divisions of teams -- including four for the supposedly kinder, gentler sex -- from Arizona and beyond hit the ice for four days of hard-hitting action that just might make you forget the NHL. Admission is free, teeth are optional, and mullets are highly recommended. Call 480-585-RINK or visit www.hockeytourney.com. -- Craig Wallach
