Amor Latin Feel

See stars from south of the border

SAT 6/11
Can you imagine a more popular four-hour television show than Univision's Sábado Gigante? Now, picture a live version of the program that honors the best entertainers in Latino/Latina arts. Saturday, June 11, will be a good night to set the VCR, because the Seventh Annual International Las Palmas de Oro Latin American Film and Industry Awards will be held at the Dodge Theatre, 400 West Washington, at 7 p.m. The all-Spanish-language event will feature more than 25 high-profile personalities, including comedian Adal Ramones, host of the Otro Rollo variety show, and Amor Real soap opera star Ernesto Laguardia. Event producer Stella Paolini says the gala is a "very important event, much like the Golden Globes and the Oscars. It marks the first time that Phoenix will host a major television and movie awards show." Tickets cost $53 to $153. Call 480-784-4444. -- Steve Jensen

Roll With the Punches
With a bang and a whimper

SAT 6/11
Every time we make it out to see the girls of the Arizona Roller Derby, somebody gets slapped. And, somehow, it's never us. On Saturday, June 11, we'll push our luck again for the final throwdown, a.k.a. the "Royal Rumble Championship," between the Bad News Beaters and the undefeated Bruisers, at Castle Sports Club, 11420 North 19th Avenue. As if the last match of the season -- the Roller Derby's second -- weren't enough of an incentive to lay down $12 at the door, derby-goers will be treated to an old-fashioned grudge match between the two teams. The Beaters -- whose only losses this season came at the hands of the Bruisers -- provide said grudge. The action starts at 8 p.m.; doors open at 7. Cool 'n' casual at Wrigley Mansion

FRI 6/10
For once, leave the tight pants, spike heels and bling at home, and chill at the Pajama Party from 9 p.m. Friday, June 10, to 1 a.m. at Geordie's in the historic Wrigley Mansion, 2501 East Telawa Trail. A $10 cover charge is your passport to a laid-back evening of appetizer and drink specials, giveaways, and a DJ spinning a mix of dance tunes to keep your little eyes open. And you'll want to look around -- the big white house on the hill, currently owned and maintained in grand 1930s style by George A. "Geordie" Hormel, was used by the chewing-gum-making, Cubs-owning Wrigleys as their tiny 12-bathroom, 11-fireplace winter cottage. Increase the eye-candy quotient by wearing your cuddliest or most sizzling bedtime attire and entering the costume contest. Call 602-955-4079 or visit www.wrigleymansion.com. -- Julie Peterson
