Bands of Brothers

The family that plays together . . .

THU 7/28
The Rubber Robot that plays Emerald Lounge this week is not the band by the same name that wears horse-head masks and plays the theremin. Nor are they a soulless, automated device that looks and responds just like a human. "I kind of got Rubber Robot from -- well, my sister's always been a sci-fi nut," says front man Rafael Montoya, "and me and the bass player have a lot of jam-band influences, so we're adaptable, like rubber. And I think of the three of us as a well-oiled machine." Montoya's brother, on the other hand, is the musical type -- he's Fatigo's Mike Montoya. Los hermanosplay nice at 10 p.m. Thursday, July 28, at 1514 North Seventh Avenue (Emerald Lung, to the cognoscenti), with Disaster Kid. The 21-and-older show is free. Give back to the scene

Lounge Lizards
Make ours acoustic

SAT 7/30
It's hard to get all metaphysical 'n' chill 'n' shit with a Stratocaster hooked into the stacks. So the "traveling caravan of finely tuned mutants" -- read: dirty hippies, likely, and ironic types -- otherwise known as the locally touring Champa Lounge, plays acoustic on Saturday, July 30, at Chasers, 8005 East Roosevelt in Scottsdale, starting at 9 p.m. The unplugged lineup includes FERD, Ditty Danko, Cliff, and A Few Random Drunks. Admission is $5 for those "21 and deader." Call 480-945-4985 or see champa.7h.com. -- Joe Watson
