Bands of Brothers

The family that plays together . . .

 THU 7/28
The Rubber Robot that plays Emerald Lounge this week is not the band by the same name that wears horse-head masks and plays the theremin. Nor are they a soulless, automated device that looks and responds just like a human. "I kind of got Rubber Robot from -- well, my sister's always been a sci-fi nut," says front man Rafael Montoya, "and me and the bass player have a lot of jam-band influences, so we're adaptable, like rubber. And I think of the three of us as a well-oiled machine." Montoya's brother, on the other hand, is the musical type -- he's Fatigo's Mike Montoya. Los hermanos play nice at 10 p.m. Thursday, July 28, at 1514 North Seventh Avenue (Emerald Lung, to the cognoscenti), with Disaster Kid. The 21-and-older show is free. Modifying Modified
Give back to the scene

SAT 7/30
On Saturday, July 30, Modified Arts, 407 East Roosevelt, wants to give us a big thank you. Uh, you're welcome. Now, give Modified your money and help support the local music scene and the eclectic club. The Modified Benefit show features six Arizona bands, including electro pop Peachcake, hardcore screamo ensemble Where Eagles Dare, and the indie rock sounds of Dear and the Headlights. The Revenge, Awake and Alert, and Shadowbox round out the packed lineup. "It's your venue, it's your music," says Leslie Barton, Modified booking manager. Doors open at 7 p.m., and admission costs $5, with proceeds going toward renovations to the venue. Call 602-462-5516 or visit www.modified.org. -- Steve Jansen

Lounge Lizards
Make ours acoustic

SAT 7/30
It's hard to get all metaphysical 'n' chill 'n' shit with a Stratocaster hooked into the stacks. So the "traveling caravan of finely tuned mutants" -- read: dirty hippies, likely, and ironic types -- otherwise known as the locally touring Champa Lounge, plays acoustic on Saturday, July 30, at Chasers, 8005 East Roosevelt in Scottsdale, starting at 9 p.m. The unplugged lineup includes FERD, Ditty Danko, Cliff, and A Few Random Drunks. Admission is $5 for those "21 and deader." Call 480-945-4985 or see champa.7h.com. -- Joe Watson
