Kiss Me Skate

Old-school's out in Glendale

SAT 8/13
When rollerblades exploded into suburbia, they got caught up in the whirlwind of extreme sports, baggy pants, and unintelligible lingo of kids pulling "serious air" off "gnarly half-pipes." Meanwhile, the general camaraderie and anachronistic charm that went with them were left in the dust. Until, that is, some marketers hatched a plan to shamelessly promote their new film Roll Bounce. Local "bouncers" show off their chops at the Roll Bounce Skate-Off, scheduled for 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, August 13, at Great Skate of Glendale, 10054 North 43rd Avenue. The winning team will get a chance to perform its number at the movie's Hollywood première. Registration is free. Call 623-842-1182 or visit www.rollbounceskateoff.com. -- Evan Wyloge

The return of grid hopes

SAT 8/13
Maybe Sundays aren't for losing anymore. Suddenly, your Arizona Cardinals -- the NFL's poster children of futility -- have become a chic pick to click in 2005, and if second-year head coach Dennis Green can fashion a playoff run, those hard-core fans disguised as aluminum benches at Sun Devil Stadium might just begin to take on human form (and maybe there'll even be more of 'em). The Redbirds kick off the preseason versus the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday, August 13, at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe. Game time is 7 p.m. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster. Big flap in Bisbee

8/11-8/14
Bird is the word in Bisbee this weekend, as hard-core and novice birders go "pishing" (i.e., bird-calling) at the Southwest Wings Birding and Nature Festival. The 14th annual affair, continuing Thursday, August 11, through Sunday, August 14, at Copper Queen Plaza, 45 Gila Drive in Bisbee, features workshops, exhibits by various environmental groups, and a keynote address by Pete Dunne, author of tomes such as Feather Quest and Wind Masters. Perhaps the best part(s) of the event are the field trips to nearby southern Arizona locales in search of native and exotic avians, such as elf and spotted owls, tanagers, grosbeaks, nightjars, trogons, flycatchers, warblers, and Mexican jays. Admission is $10, which provides entry to all events. Kids under 12 get in free. Call 520-432-3554 or see www.swwings.org. -- Clay McNear
