Lady Devils spike out

9/9-9/10
Looks like the lovely ladies of the ASU volleyball team need to step up to the net and show some, er . . . balls. After a dismal 2-4 effort thus far in what is turning out to be a pretty miserable preseason, these spike-blocking sirens are looking to rebound during the Wyndham Buttes Volleyball Classic at Wells Fargo Arena, 600 East Stadium Drive in Tempe. But volley dollies like outside hitters Nicole Morton and Nina Reeves will have their work cut out for them as they take on the Texas State Bobcats, the Lady Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona University, and the Tigers of Auburn University in a round-robin competition. The divas start digging at 4 p.m. Friday, September 9, and 10 a.m. Saturday, September 10, with match-ups taking place at various times. Tickets cost $3 to $5. Warp Speeding
Go, cart, go

TUE 9/13
We all remember riding those banged-up bumper cars at the state fair, but F1 Race Factory has taken the mini-mobile concept to the max with its Indoor Kart Racing. F1's go-go-karts can make 45-plus miles per hour on the facility's twin quarter-mile tracks. The Factory's Fall League Racing series continues at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 13. The cost is $40 per league session -- a small price to pay for speeding without limits. Make it so, Geordie. F1 Race Factory is located at 317 South 48th Street (one block south of Washington Street). Call 602-302-7223 or visit www.F1RaceFactory.com. -- Clay McNear

Memorial Day
Run/Walk for the roses

SUN 9/11
Running into a burning building or storming the cockpit of a hijacked jet are truly heroic feats. Honor the memory of 9/11 victims by participating in the inaugural 9/11 Run/Walk. The event was started by the widow of Todd Beamer, who helped prevent United Flight 93 from crashing into its intended target. Todd's last words -- "Let's roll!" -- will undoubtedly serve as an inspirational mantra, pushing runners to a new personal best . . . or at least the finish line. (All proceeds from the 5K event benefit Heroic Choices.) The race starts at 7:15 a.m. Sunday, September 11, at Steele Indian School Park, 300 East Indian School. Race-day registration costs $25.
