High Trek Adventurers invade Tempe

SAT 10/15
f you're tooling around in Tempe on Saturday, October 15, and see a screaming horde running around and tearing its collective hair out, don't fret; it's not Godzilla rising from the abyssal depths of Town Lake, but a high-concept affair called High Trek Adventure. The homage to TV's Amazing Raceis a game in which teams of two attempt to outdo each other for cool prizes. Each team is given a camera and a variety of clues to locate 12 checkpoints, which they must find in order, digitally documenting their success. The rules, according to High Trek's Web site, are thus: participants can "call anyone, ask anyone on the street, ask other teams or use your telepathic powers, sprint, run, walk, gallop, skip, jump, crawl or walk backwards and use any form of public transportation" to achieve their goals. Suh-wing, Batters
Here's the pitch

SAT 10/15
In an era in which video games and short attention spans rule, it's hard for kids to find both the time and the requisite nine for a good old-fashioned game of baseball. The game's always on, however, at the Kiwanis Park Batting Range, where ballplayers young and old can swing at an endless array of fastballs for a fee. It's been 15 years since the range opened, and the City of Tempe marks the occasion with the Kiwanis Park Grand Slam Bash from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, October 15. The event features free batting for all, T-ball for the younger kids, food, raffle prizes and more. The batting range is located 6005 South All-America Way. Do the Monster Mash
What the truck?

10/15-10/16
4x4 fanatics skip Halloween and go directly to Christmas at the Truckin' & 4x4 Aftermarket Expo, which features gifts galore for the truck connoisseur. The event, scheduled Saturday and Sunday, October 15 and 16, features a freestyle monster-truck show, rock-crawl competitions, and, of course, the Miss TruckinÕ Nationals pageant. The madness ensues at 9 a.m. each day at Firebird International Raceway, 20000 South Maricopa Road in Chandler. Tickets are $24 per day, $38 for the weekend, and $3 off with advance purchase. Call 602-268-0200 or 480-784-4444, or visit www.firebirdraceway.com. -- Clay McNear
