Bone Mama Mia!

Mary McCann sounds off

SUN 10/16
"Poetry readings are boring. This is a rock show compared to poetry readings," says Mary "Bone Mama" McCann, who will perform her high-octane sound poems at the Noisy by Naturebook-release party on Sunday, October 16, at Modified Arts, 407 East Roosevelt Street. This definitely ain't your ordinary "I was born in a log cabin" book reading, but an interactive, multimedia experience. "People will laugh, cry and join in," says McCann. The Tempe-based performance artist and writer teamed up with ASU's Pyracantha Press to create a limited-edition, two-sided origami book form in which McCann's vocal cadences are reflected through the use of visual typography and shaped text. She'll perform three sets of poems, each relying on atmospheric percussion supplied by Todd Chuba to enhance the already snappy prose, including a poem that reflects the sound of tires hitting wet pavement in Arizona. "I love sound. I love explosions," adds McCann. "I'll get the audience to create the sound with me."

The Suns open their home schedule with a preseason game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday, October 15. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. at America West Arena, 201 East Jefferson Street. For tickets or other information, call 1-800-462-2849 or 480-784-4444, or visit www.nba.com/suns. -- Clay McNear

Mod Squad
Urban outfitters make a dif

FRI 10/14
Baron Gordon is busy. When the artist isn't designing boutiques or large-scale art installations, he's usually conducting live-painting demonstrations at hipster events along with the Alpha Monster Artist Collective. "We've been described as 'bold and urban,' but we're versatile in different forms of art," says Gordon. The artistic endeavors of the six-member cooperative -- running the gamut from the colorful, collage-like work of Sterling Bartlett to the graf art of Dumperfoo -- will be on display at Urban Fusion on Friday, October 14. The modish mega-event, benefiting Make A Difference, also includes food from such local restaurants as Cibo and Calabria, as well as entertainment by Axé Capoeira, the comedians of The Originals Improv, fire dancing by SoulTribe, and music from Sunday Morning Drive and DJs Senbad and Organic. The scene is Gold Spot Gallery, 1001 North Third Avenue. The 21-and-over event starts at 6 p.m. Tickets cost $30, and are available by calling 602-973-2212, extension 224. -- Benjamin Leatherman
