No Sex in the City

Woman seeks man who doesn't suck

11/17-12/4
Bad dates blow chunks. Whether it's the icky chick who talked about her colonoscopy over dinner or the gross guy who said he wanted to "feel your belly button from the inside out," there's always one meet-up that makes you want to throw up. In the comedy Bad Dates, opening Thursday, November 17, fortysomething single mom and shoe snob Haley Walker recounts a whole series of horrible hookups from her Manhattan bedroom, including "Cholesterol Man" and "Bug Guy." Playwright and Brandeis University graduate Theresa Rebeck has done something very different from her dissertation on Victorian melodrama with this modern romp, which has been likened to Sex and the Cityand Bridget Jones's Diary. Bad Dates runs through December 4 at Herberger Theater Center, 222 East Monroe. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturdays; and 1 and 7 p.m. Sundays. Tickets cost $28 to $51. Call 602-252-9497 or visit www.aztheatreco.org. -- Niki D'Andrea

Kidney Despair
Surviving and thriving

SAT 11/19
The performing arts often provide an avenue for exploring the full range of human emotions, and there aren't many events more dramatic than a near-death experience. Harlem-based multimedia artist Sekou Sundiata uses standup comedy, spoken word, and theatrical monologue to tell his personal story -- which includes a five-year bout with kidney disease and the eventual transplant that restored his health. On Saturday, November 19, Sundiata performs pieces inspired by his book blessing the boats to cast light on the big stuff: life, death, despair, love and friendship. Showtime is 7 p.m. at Gammage Auditorium, 1200 South Forest in Tempe. Tickets are $20, $10 for students. Call 480-965-3434 or visit www.asugammage.com. -- Rebecca Zumoff

The Power of the Dark Side
Get Floyd again

SAT 11/19
Since a reunion of the original Pink Floyd seems highly unlikely, given the ongoing blood feud between David Gilmour and Roger Waters, frustrated fanatics can get their fix at the Australian Pink Floyd Show, a touring tribute to the prog-rock masters that includes "original Floyd inflatables," a massive laser-light show, and a note-for-note re-creation of The Dark Side of the Moon. Also expect renditions of Floyd faves like "Another Brick in the Wall" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond." Showtime is 8 p.m. Saturday, November 19, at Dodge Theatre, 400 West Washington. Tickets range from $25 to $65. Call 480-784-4444 or visit www.eveningstarproductions.com. -- Clay McNear
