New York City's Liars may have been one of the first to re-popularize dance-influenced post-punk with their debut They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument On Top, released in 2001, but they've since moved on. After confusing fans and critics alike with their sophomore album, They Were Wrong, So We Drowned, a lo-fi trip to woods inhabited by witches and their persecutors, the band recently released Drum's Not Dead, a rare logical progression in the band's short career. This newest album uses the rhythmic qualities of their previous work as the foundation for a series of tracks meditating on creativity and self-doubt: Repetitive tribal rhythms and atmospheric, if only slightly melodic, guitar and keyboard loops back singer Angus Andrew's mix of yelps, howls and falsetto singing. Liars' newest songs lend themselves well to a night of awkward dancing and exuberant flailing around -- not only by members of the band, but also by anyone else willing to embrace their more intuitive side.
