Move Over, Ann Coulter

Meet the woman behind ASU's Caucasian American Men's Club

"I will bet my life, quite frankly, that older people voted at higher rates than younger people in 2006," he says.

Clint Bolick, a conservative libertarian who recently joined the Goldwater Institute to launch a center for constitutional law, says the numbers aren't surprising.

"The last time I remember an issue galvanizing young people was a very long time ago, and that was the draft," he says. "Even the Iraq war may seem a little abstract because we don't have a draft. Issues that directly affect students aren't there."

It doesn't seem to bother, or even occur to, Emily Mitchell that many students on campus just aren't interested. The last thing on her mind is apathy.

"It hasn't been that long since I was a college student. I remember sitting in political science class with my hand raised for seven minutes and nobody calling on me because they thought they knew what I was going to say," she says. "I remember thinking that The Vagina Monologues was not the best way to help women and wishing I could do something about it," she says.

She got her wish.

"We are the new rebels. The liberals are the academic elite, and we are the ones breaking them down," she says. "They're like the generals. But there are only a few of them. We're the ones in the trenches doing the fighting. So, I can walk away with a smile knowing the ones on the highest horses are shot first."

The Leadership Institute is not the only conservative group challenging what some perceive as a leftist bias on college campuses. Controversial writer and activist David Horowitz has his Campaign for Academic Freedom. Aside from penning a couple of books on the topic (The Professors and Indoctrination U: The Left's War Against Academic Freedom), Horowitz and his colleagues at the Freedom Center in Los Angeles have written an "academic bill of rights," which they have tried to make both federal and state law.

Horowitz says a professor's politics should never be known, even in a political science class. He says too many students graduate with a bias learned in classes like Chicano or women's studies.

Whether or not bias exists on ASU's campus is difficult to gauge. There is no document that lists the political leanings of professors.

Mitchell isn't the first conservative to stir the pot at ASU. In the 1980s, a group of three — Jay Heiler, Matthew Scully and Len Munsil — rose to powerful campus leadership positions, causing a stir on campus and earning the nickname The God Squad. (All have been heard from since: Heiler went on to become chief of staff for then-Governor Fife Symington, Scully wrote speeches for Dan Quayle and George W. Bush, and Munsil made an unsuccessful bid for governor last year.)

Like Emily Mitchell, the three stood to fight for conservative values, and they also found a professor, Mark Reader, to pick a fight with. Reader was a political science professor involved in the anti-nuclear movement. He spoke about liberalism and conservatism in the classroom, where his opinions about nuclear power and other environmental issues were well-known. He was singled out by The God Squad and a D.C.-based group, Accuracy in Academia, as a mouthpiece for the left. It got so bad for him that he received death threats, and the story made national headlines.

Reader, who retired nine years ago, says the persecution of professors who want to challenge the powers that be continues, and so does political inertia from students.

"People have been kept ignorant. They just don't understand the relationship between cause and effect," he says. "There's been a great failing of the educational process. The other thing going on is: Young people, those who are thoughtful, might have an underlying sense of hopelessness."

Emily Mitchell is one young person full of hope. She starts her workday early. She's up by 6 a.m., answering e-mails from a network of students stretched across Arizona and New Mexico. Then, she has phone calls to make. A typical daily schedule is filled with notes like, "Call Chasity and reassure her and check progress," and "Call Sandra to ask how meeting went."

By midmorning, Mitchell's in her white Jeep Cherokee (she calls it the Protest Mobile), on her way to school. She works at all the ASU campuses, Scottsdale, Mesa and Glendale community colleges, and other schools in the Valley. She's never exactly sure where she'll wind up by the end of the day, so she keeps the Jeep stocked with essentials: poster board, paint, a table, a bullhorn and cookies.

On a hot morning in April, she's running a few minutes behind schedule for a demonstration she helped ASU Students for Life stage. It's national Pro-Life T-shirt day, so Mitchell's got a full plate of demonstrations to manage. Before she arrives at the display outside ASU's Memorial Union, the six or so students manning the table mill around a graphic, eight-foot anti-abortion poster. They arrange pamphlets and plastic fetuses on a table and glance around for someone to educate. Dozens of students pass by without even blinking. No one stops to ask questions, and the anti-abortion students hang back. They aren't passing out literature or starting conversations.

After reading this article, I remembered why I moved out of the country.

Why are you hating on Ann Coulter, either be as great as her or try to throw your hat out there and see what you are working with.

I actually worked on the web team for the third presidential candidate (48 state's ballots) in 2004. From what we witnessed and many students I spoke with in 2004 and since, they are turned off by politics in general. 2004 witnessed a turning point at the federal level. The Democrats and the Republicans noticing that they had a real contender for the first time in a decade met to ban the candidate and all other "third-party" candidates from the public debates. Sad thing... most of the older folks I have spoken with actually think that we only have 2 parties. The sweeping of congress in 2006 is overblown it's a joke and I think you all know it. Who authorized the patriot act and patriot act 2? Both Republicans and Democrats! They were given a 5000 page document with a 500 page summary 15 minutes prior to the vote. I read pretty good but I think I can only read 10 maybe 15 pages of text in 15 minutes. How about you? So... who do you trust!?

Wow. She makes me want to have an abortion, on principle alone.

I particularly enjoyed how triumphant she felt, that her little protege answered the abortion question posed around rape, so well.

That many women find it's "something good, that came from a bad situation."

I wonder if that's how she felt when that ugly man grabbed her on the way to her car? When he held her down and pushed his StinkyOozingHardHard penis into her vagina. Into her anus. Her vagina. Her anus. How it felt when she got pregnant and was blessed with sore nipples from suckling life into her new little darling. The joy of buying buying food, clothes, medecine, college for this lifelong reminder that she is a victim. OH WAIT.

THAT never happened to HER.But, for 1 out of 3 women in America, this or something like it, Will happen.

And that's just the reported cases. There are three women in one of the pic's. I wonder, if these are the kind of girls that would report it?

I love that she says she is a DOER. As far as I read- she sits at a table and waits for people who think like HER, to come up and gratify her ego, and agree with her. Oh, and she starts racist clubs for money.

I wonder how many hours this little Doer donates to free child care for children born of rape? Or how much money she raises for scholarships for children born of rape? A diaper drive for rape victims. She did say, she's not a thinker.

I see her going far. I saw Reese Witherspoon's The Election.

I only wish you had listed her upcoming events, so that I could drop by and thank her for inspiring me to get all of my closest vaginas active. Kind of a new Vagina Dialogue if you will.

The flag burning at Duke on 9/11 never happened. That's nothing but a fabrication, aka a lie.

I found this article to be very poorly written. Three examples why:

1. The whole article is moot. As we find out after sludging through the whole thing: "Her contract with the Leadership Institute expired in April, and she decided not to renew. Instead, she's decided to become a high school biology teacher." Um, OK. So what's the point again?

2. "She discovered politics in college. Like many in her generation, Mitchell says it was the September 11 terrorist attacks, which struck when she was a freshman at Duke University, that grabbed her attention. She remembers riding the shuttle bus in silence to class that day and, later, watching other students burn a flag on campus, which shocked her." I don't believe this ever occurred. Did the author go to Duke University when researching this article? Certainly a flag burning on campus on 9/11 would have made national headlines. This is just conservative bunk that went unchallenged by the author.

3. Early in the article we learn she has a degree in biology. Later, the author states: "She lives with her husband, a fellow scientist..." I'm sorry, but a BS in Biology does not make you a scientist.

I could offer more examples from throughout this article, but it's time to move on with my day.

I'm getting rather tired about hearing about deceptive practices from self-proclaimed Conservative, particularly when they have this (false) impression about themselves that the difference between Liberals and Conservatives is Conservatives have 'integrity.' And I say this in regard to anybody and everybody who cannot be honest in their business and public relationships: stop the lies, stop the deception, stop misrepresenting 'things' to advance a cause which you find so worth endorsing. If the cause was all that worthy of time and energy, it will sell itself rather than having some front-person like a barker at a county carnival side-show. They tell you one thing to get you in the door and as you're seated, you find quite another. What does anyone think is the advantage in that sort of promotion of a product or an idea? People soon understand they have been lied-to and the relationship starts on a sour note where once trust has been expended, it is so much more difficult to heal. If a business or a political club or a religion is worthy of any consideration, it will sell itself by the enthusiasm of its supporters in conversation with others. Allow others to sample it without distortion and if it is for them, they'll particpate or join or they won't. Why would anybody hide behind 'front' organizations, false or business names, but for an underlying shame about uwhat they are involved. Doesn't that say a great deal for the venture and more so about the personal integrity of the person(s) promoting the venture, ideology, cause, etc.? I'm sure someone could find a list of similar sins committed by Liberals, but here is another example of the nature of deception among some Conservatives. Perhaps they should listen to Rush Limbaugh more often to get a complete grasp on how important integrity is to Conservatives, Rush being, of course, the prime example. Please...give us all a break from your self-promotion and more so yourselves, self-deception. I can only ask who defined integrity to him and perhaps to Conservatives in general?

Yes, it would be comforting if all conservatives were dumb or overzealous or easily visible, but they are not. Most are smart, well-organized, and committed to a variety of causes they will fight for tooth and nail.

And the liberals among us - and I am one - had better be just as smart, inventive, and just like Emily Mitchell, brazen as we set forth the case for our beliefs in various liberal causes.

As you can see, Ms. Mitchell's confidence in her beliefs and her mission is unwavering. I am sure the same can be said of many working for both conservative and liberal causes alike, but I don't get the sense liberal groups are giving the type of grass-roots support to organizations the way conservative groups like The Leadership Institute are doing across campuses nationwide.

I worry more that Ms. Mitchell's students at her new school may fall prey to her own biases in the teaching of a curriculum that will most likely cover a lot of ground on evolution.

This little reichwing nimrod wants to teach BIOLOGY next??? How much time will elapse before she interjects her Christian claptrap into the curriculum in the form of that assinine "creationism" BS? If I was a parent with a child attending one of her classes I would make it beyond abundantly clear to her that if she uttered even one word of her rightwing twaddle, I wouldn't rest until her certification to teach in AZ public schools was revoked.

It is high time we all stopped suffering these rightwing idiots gladly!

As long as there's money to be made bashing the poor, defenseless, and outnumbered, there's going to be lots and lots of "smart" people like this pretty girl willing to act immorally on behalf of the rich and powerful (Clarence Thomas, Michelle Malkin). It's the easy way up the ladder for too many people in this country. By the way, if you're an immigrant like that Polish guy mentioned in the story, you don't get to say immigrants are ruining this country. Just a few years ago your entire national group was being persecuted as subhuman. You should know better.

It is typical for people who think of colleges as liberally biased to lie about their experience. Mitchell's professor did not tell her she could not defend capitalism. You will see many other claims on the liar David Horowitz website that are not true. I guess conservatism makes sense if you just make stuff up. Emily,if what you believe in is so wonderful, why do you have to lie?

penalcolony

Emily Mitchell rolled up $28,500 in commissions in six months, and then . . . well, she couldn't very well prop up another 57 bogus student "clubs" on Arizona campuses, could she? So she's off to greener pastures. If that's idealism, I'll eat one of her old tiaras.

Just another whining spoiled crybaby conservative running a campaign of hypocricy and fake persecutiuon. It's funny how conservatives rail against affirmative action when it comes to minority student admissions but demand quotas for conservative teachers to stop the liberal ideological factory of universities. Conservatism is a philosophy of hypocricy: talk about small government during your campaign but once the election is over expand the government's abillity to spy on people that the people in the party don't like such as abortionists, gays, anti war activists.

Other flip flops include "we need accountabillity in our officials" but turn on the news you see a Republican or a conservative commentator not practicing what they preach or getting in trouble for breaking the law, cries of "liberal witch hunt" will be screamed faster by these crybabies faster than when Johnnie Cochran played the race card in the OJ case. It's amazing how conservatives keep winning elections on their self fulfilling prophecy on "the government is the enemy" rhetoric, yet they are carrer government employees. Every time they're the ones in charge the governmnet is mired in scandals, corruption and debt and the people lose confidence in the government.

Is this the plan for the conservative movement in this country? What happened to small government, protecting our country not the campaign contributors overseas intrests, responsibillity, strong defense and fiscal discipline. That has all been replaced by a bunch of whiners of flag desecration when they're wearing an American flag shirt and matching boxer shorts (protesters of the Vietnam war regularly got beaten up for wearing the American flag as a shirt now after 9/11 every gung ho redneck has to have an Ameican flag on their clothing), Theocrats who want us to bomb Muslim conservative fundemnetalists but do nothing of the Christian facists who want to turn America into Ameristan because of gay marriage, abortion, sex education and the teaching of evolution are another brigade in the Crybaby conservative movement. But my all time favorite hypocrits are the ones who rail against illegal immigrants but they're the ones who hire them to dodge taxes and keep wages low.

Funny stuff. Mitchell is living in an alternate universe. She's paid by GOP front groups to start up College Campus Clubs, and cries about her 1st Amendment rights being restricted?I've got some bad news for her. You couldn't get within a half mile of any speech by Bush or Cheney if they think that you might protest or disagree with Dear Leaders propaganda. Cry me a river Emily.

It sounds like she should be working right next to Ann Coulter on Faux News, fighting Liberals. Here's a great quote from Ann at the Conservative Political Action Comittee Conference: "We need to execute people like John Walker in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed too."

Yeah, move over Ann Coulter, here comes Emily!

Megan Irwin wrote quite a beautiful prose about a pathetic human front for some hick from Virginia. I wonder how difficult that must have been. This front rails against socialism, liberalism, feminism, intellectualism, and every other real and imagined enemy she could dream of. I was surprised there was no negative talk of elitism, like she would rather go to a non-elite doctor when she is ill! The dumbing down of America continues. Even Monica Goodling knew to hire an elite lawyer when she needed one, she did not get a Regent U graduate. But remember, she gets paid to do this. Like they say, follow the money.

This is very amusing,... I guess the Republican or GOP which ever and not in any particular order, can now affirm that they want to be a legetimate little boy groper committee on campus. What a great way for real CAUCASIAN men to be led, by a ole down home country blonde. I say go for it!!!!

There are a few books from the 1960's which Ms. Mitchell should read..I think she'll find herself or some one much like her, in many of their pages..All the White's on those pages said the same thing: .."I'm not a racist!, I'm not a bigot!, it's those pushy black and brown people making demands on innocent Christian Whites. It's Whites that are under attack"..I can see that our sweet, easily manipulated, little white Mensa (they must be disgusted) flower is just trying to help Whites along the way..How kind..I can see that spending 20+ years in S.C. was the perfect place to get 1/2 an education and something tells me a bit of a racist one...Tell our little white flower to attend any power or business meeting in D.C. or L.A. or Wall Street any night or day of the week and I believe she can find all the white men she ever dreamed possible (not many women..but you know ..they are just women after all..regardless of the colour..so those white guys do like to keep them out of those meetings mostly)..And those white guys still do run about 90% of everything in the country..but, I doubt they need her help in anyway..What a pathetic waste of her life..to become some white guy from Virginia's Leadership Institutes (what a misnomer)front woman..Sad..all those brains or so she says ..what a waste..by the way..I just read that approx 38% of the population are Caucasian Hetro males...so tell me..why should they control 80-90% of the economy and the government? Get you facts straight and stop that endless kevetching..Ohhh! poor pitiful little white blond girl..If you believe those conservative values then either join up and go fight in Iraq! Do the right thing! or shut up about it..you look strong and healthy..are you scared?..what about your husband?..why isn't he fighting in Iraq?..You have a sneaky stealthy job my dear and that makes you sleazy.. and that's not good for Whites of any kind!...One last question. Did your family ever own Slaves?...Repulsed in Bremereton

In the article, Emily Mitchell recalls September 11 at Duke University..."She remembers ... watching other students burn a flag on campus, which shocked her."

Well, I throw this out to all: can anyone cough up any archived footage of this flag burning at Duke University on September 11th? Any press accounts? Any pictures with a time stamp that's not been photoshopped in?

Anyone? Because I'd be surprised to see any real facts behind this alleged "story".

Professional victims like Emily Mitchell cannot stand the sunlight. She and Horowitz and Blackwell love the smell of money and the protection that darkness brings.

What is it with Emily and her rants against "socialism" and "communism?" These systems do not exist today. What we call "Communist" China is Capitalism on steroids - so much so that when the President of China visited America last year, he met with Bill Gates in Seattle first, and then with our President George Bush. Emily is "protesting" against something that does not exist, because people are free to practice an unfettered form of capitalism today - as international corporations rule the day. As a result, there is something strange about what she is doing.

"In one breath, Mitchell can explain why she's against Hillary Clinton, affirmative action and feminism, then switch gears with a smile and offer you a cookie."

That's charm? Maybe if this was the 1950s.

This Mitchell person, she sounds like a crazed robot. Her pronouncement are so determinedly chipper -- her arguments about keeping a child conceived by a rape made me blanche, especially coming from someone who's clearly never been there -- that Mensa or no, you wonder just how complex a thought she can actually process. Something the professor who rejected her initial capitalism vs. communism paper seemed to have gotten a taste of.

All in all, Ms. Mitchell sounds naive, like the perennial newly-matriculated college freshman who's convinced she and only she has uncovered True Knowledge & Wisdom. This entirely aside from the fact that she sounds like a chronic drama queen and a liar.

Maybe young people have checked out of the political process and activism precisely because people like Emily Mitchell cheat and dishonestly subvert the system solely to win their cause not to win consensus that there is a better way to live our lives. Squeaky wheels are ecstatic being squeaky as long as they think their grease can get on others as well. I truly feel sorry for this woman.

As a black woman, I've been involved with various organizations specific to black women... and the kid actually has it right, it's about culture. If he'd wanted to start a Polish-American club, then yay for him -- but WTF kind of "culture" is "Caucasian"? It's not. The day people actually realize that race is nothing but a social construct is the day I will run naked through the streets. I opt to call myself 'black' over 'African-American' because saying 'African-American' is about as specific as saying "Hi, I'm North American." Africa is an entire continent, and since I am unable to trace my ancestors, I'll use what I've been given (black).

My point, however, is this: I don't think anyone would have a problem with white people claiming their heritage (hello, have you seen the pride that overflows in enclaves like a Little Italy or Germantown?), so long as they don't claim their "culture" as white. I hate to break it to you, but that's the color of someone's couch, not a heritage or ethnicity.

So figure out WTF you are -- Polish, German, Danish, Dutch -- and celibrate it if you want to, but don't stand around and whine that no one's looking out for you.

Bravo to Megan Irwin for tracking down the professor Mitchell claims "discriminated" against her for her political beliefs only to find out the professor in question is a Republican who found the paper Mitchell wrote to be weakly researched and argued. Too often these claims of "liberal bias" are accepted at face value, and I bet if looked into more would be shown to be false.

This backs up an impression I have of conservatives like Mitchell who accuse academia as being unfair to conservatives - when in reality the real problem is that these right-wing college students are so arrogant and they can't belief they could get bad grades because their arguments and research are bad, not because professors disagree with their views.
