Big Not So Easy

Dazzling film explores a bayou time

It’s difficult to remember New Orleans pre-Hurricane Katrina. But thanks to the stunning visual epic Hurricane on the Bayou, we can indulge in wicked shots of alligator-infested waters and the Crescent City’s famed electric culture.

The 2006 effort, narrated by Meryl Streep, was originally slated to showcase the stunning beauty of southern Louisiana and its vanishing wetlands. Then, the natural disaster struck and the film’s direction shifted to capturing rescue and recovery tales told by four renowned musicians (Allen Toussaint, Tab Benoit, Amanda Shaw, and Chubby Carrier). Concerned about watching the same ol’ sob story? No worries, because producer Greg MacGillivray’s (Everest) aesthetic choices and a driving jazz, blues, and gospel soundtrack keep the film upbeat.
