Seams Nice

Textile artist airs out her dirty laundry for fine art's sake

If you happen to be one of those “creative types,” you probably house a huge heap of disgusting laundry hemorrhaging from your closet, green stink lines undulating. And if you can imagine yourself diving into that pile like Uncle Scrooge into his money bin, you might just have a piece of fine art on your hands.

Jes Gettler’s show “Seam” features a heaping pile of crummy-looking clothes that will act as her muse for a performance art piece. “A lot of my past work has to do with repetitive action and daily labors in the domestic realm,” says Gettler. “The performance (which can be seen on Friday, August 16) involves the repetitive action of undoing the seam from the sleeves of formal white shirts and stitching the two sleeves together. It resides somewhere between utility and futility, conscious and unconscious.”

Her performance and accompanying visual works – in which she uses drywall mud to embed clothing and other objects into the gallery walls – are the perfect excuses for you slobs to put off that laundry for one more day and visit the show.
