Hot, steamy fun in the summertime

Arguably the King of the Monsters, Godzilla is unquestionably one of the all-time Kings of the Summer Movie. What better way, then, to observe the last day of August than by watching the titanic reptile throw down and put his gigantic taloned feet in the asses of a couple of other monsters? You can do just that in the latest installment of the redoubtable Midnite Movie Mamacita’s “Grindhouse Redux” series.

The movie in question is known in this country, among other titles, as The Terror of Godzilla (if you’re Japanese, or a purist, it’s Mekagojira no gyakushu). Whatever you call it, it’s a vintage-1975 epic in which our fire-breathing hero with the sour expression and the irritable bleat takes on Mechagodzilla -- an alien-robot version of himself -- as well as a dragon-like menace named Titanosaurus. Fun for all ages.

Also fun, but decidedly not for all ages, is the evening’s second feature: Flesh Gordon. The 1974 curio places cheesy -- and mostly tame -- ´70s-style porn action into a very funny and quite lovingly crafted parody of Flash Gordon, that great space-opera serial of the ´30s. Our hero Flesh, his paramour Dale Ardor, and their scientific advisor Dr. Jerkoff do battle with Emperor Wang the Perverted of the Planet Porno. You get the idea; it’s sophisticated, Noel Coward kind of stuff.
