More About

The St. Louis Cardinals may well be the most annoying team in Major League Baseball. From Rick Ankiel’s and Brendan Ryan’s obnoxious, knee-high soccer socks to skipper Tony La Russa's consistent insistence on batting the pitcher in the eight spot, the redbirds are a thorn in baseball’s side. But what’s most maddening is that these quirky formulas work, evidenced by last season’s World Series domination of the Detroit Tigers. For Arizonans, there also may be a deeper reason that we loathe them: It’s a franchise named Cardinals that’s actually successful.

The not-annoying Arizona Diamondbacks open a three-game series against the surging Cards, who are battling for their playoff lives with the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs in the hotly contested National League Central division.
