Production strikes a balance between taste and aftertaste

With every passing Halloween, we find it more and more challenging to come up with original and fresh costume ideas. Instead of beautiful flowing fabric interpretations, the pseudo-holiday turns into an offend-a-thon, where folks sport Elliott Smith stabbed-in-the-chest motifs or silk-and-cotton metaphors for genitalia.

For a more sophisticated and arresting take on the dark day, check out Scorpius Dance Theatre's sensuous A Vampire Tale. Now in its fourth successful year, the high-energy production chronicles a foundling young gal who's conned by some blood-lusting vampires into joining their carnivore-friendly band.

Thu., Nov. 8, 8 p.m.; Fri., Nov. 9, 8 p.m.; Sat., Nov. 10, 8 & 10 p.m., 2007
