Wonderdogs

Poor Al and gang say “nyah, nyah” to their detractors

We all love underdogs. Overlooked and underestimated, they rise to the occasion and put the critics in their place, like that spindly kid in fifth grade who kicked Sister Philomena right in the box. Fuck, yes. Kicked her right in the box and then set fire to the school chapel. Hoo-boy.

The artists participating in the “Underdogs” exhibit have similarly upended the hierarchy. They either didn’t go to art school or dropped out, yet still managed to make their mark on the art scene. These overachievers include CrashOne, Dark Vomit, Michele Waterman, and David Russell Talbott, all who have developed organic styles and put forth splintering works.

To Poor Al, curator and participating artist, the exhibit is “about the value of perseverance and hard work.” Don’t be fooled, though. These artists aren’t mere sticker-worthy novices; they’re professionals in their own right, and many are on the front lines of the art scenes in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and San Diego.

Fri., Dec. 21, 6-10 p.m.; Saturdays, 1:30-7 p.m. Starts: Dec. 21. Continues through Dec. 29, 2007
