Sports and gambling junkies unite at the Turf
Published on January 03, 2008 at 4:00am
Ever since our daddy made sure we included Roger Staubach in our nightly childhood prayers, weve been a sports junkie. Then, as a teenager growing up on the northside, wed sneak into Turf Paradise to watch the magnificent thoroughbreds pound dirt until security threw us out. Now that were old enough to drink, were going back to the Turf to Celebrate Arizona Sports Day, which includes the annual Cotton Fitzsimmons Mile (Cotton being the best Suns coach ever, thats who!) and a $75,000 purse to the winner. Sure, its family day at the track, with a bounce house and face paintings, but itll also be crawling with sports celebrities, bluebloods, and cigar-chomping, ticket-tearing habitual gamblers. Another beautiful day in Paradise.
