Sorry, the correct track title is "I Wished On The Moon" from the album "Swinging On The Moon". Don't know why I can't get these things right the first time.
-
Emil Pulsifer 02/12/2008 12:34:00 AM
I really can't speak to the whole "wanna-be" issue, since I don't listen to this sort of "music" regardless of who voices it. To be perfectly fair, however, I must admit, after listening to some early Crosby the other day (Bing, not David) that Der Bingle was (uncharacteristically) most annoying and artificial when trying to sound like one of the "jive cats" -- I believe that's what they're called -- in songs like "Yes, Indeed", so perhaps there is some validity to the criticisms voiced by New Times staff. (Der Bingle is reported by Wikipedia to have been "hep" on the Mary Jane, and one can almost smell the smoke on that and similar tracks.) On the other hand, if KC and the Sunshine Band (or the frequency with which they've been sampled) is any indication, then Whitey does occasionally "get it". That said, I'm now going back to Mel Torme singing Wishing On The Moon. Gotta love The Velvet Fog at the height of his powers. You go, White boy.

Sounds like Nikki D'Andrea allowed her personal fetish for thuggish looking black men to cloud her judgment of what is "real" and "not real" in the world of hip hop.
Another stupid white girls senses warped by MTV.

rasheedah 01/29/2008 6:15:00 PM
that was a trite bill o'reilley style opinion - with commentary that was both ill-informed and ignorant. like someone mentioned previously, saudis, turks, armenians, iranians, and egyptians all are considered middle eastern with cultural links that are broad. if her connection to the hip-hop community is real then that's all that needs to be said. if someone is willing to judge a hip-hop scene and call it "authentic" while referring to other hip-hop as being otherwise then a) i want to see that they've don't their homework and know that rapping about socially and politically charged issues has been and always will be at the heart of art form - an art form that many both black and non-black have long been a part of. unfortunately, the bloodsucking music industry tapped into the popularity of a certain kind of rap and marketed it in a manner so that that's all that people ever hear, it's all that gets played. and many in the hip hop community are furious about that. there's room for everything and the thug life isn't the only relevant life that hip hop does/should represent. it's a part of it. appreciating and making use of an art form is something that should be applauded and hip hop is the modern incarnation of blues and jazz which was birthed from an experience but lives and thrives through its diversity. hip hop, unlike what you're "pecking," continues to be one of the most openly and comfortably diverse music genres you'll encounter.
b) if you're going to claim something to be authentic or defend someone for making the assertion that something is authentic while something else is not, be prepared to have your credibility, authenticity, and authority challenged and have tough enough skin to accept and qualify your reasoning because from where i sit, you're defending someone who should be defending her own comments and playing into the same hate-mongering that you claim to dislike in your immigration discussion. just a note - just because someone's skin is lighter, doesn't mean they have a robe in their closet - a room could be full of asian americans, latinos, native americans, middle easterners, and whites and could all look quite similar from a distance. people should have an option when listening to music. and should not feel pigeonholed into an "outsiders" definition of what an authentic experience should be as a black person, a hip hop artist, a member of a certain community, or a shock writer. and i'm sorry, it is ok to call a statement racist - if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck....

I think Niki did a great job covering the scene. Kim Commons is sad not to advertise because of the article. I've been going to Blunt since day one and try to make it down as often as I can.
I never even knew about Groove Candy until I covered it for New Times and I probably wont go to GC much because I'm not a fan of the venue. Plus I really like the scene that Blunt has created over the years. Where else you gonna see Crown City Rockers in AZ and have the MC jump off stage to break with the b-boys on floor? Blunt. Oh yeah seeing Public Enemy at Blunt was rad and so is all the sweet local rap I see there too.
I think both GC and Blunt are of great benefit to the community. Hey it's Arizona and its' about the only culture we got.
You did great Niki.

Dear me, I meant to write "Star 97.5".
Anyhoo, I just wanted to add that, regarding Mr. Eminem, I believe he refused permission to Weird Al Yankovic to do a parody cover of one of his, er, songs. Granted, it was likely food-oriented and demode, but honestly, doesn't this sort of cowardice make him a...a...[consults dictionary of underworld slang] a punk-assed bitch?

Forgot to put Lil Spank from Phearless on blast too. Fake ass gangsta. Fake ass playa. Phearless dont even have its own website, y\'all! Just a piddly Myspace account.
Know why they call him Lil Spank? Cause it\'s little and he like to spank it.
-
Emil Pulsifer 01/27/2008 8:36:00 PM
I'm sorry, and "hip-hop" means??? It seems to refer to some genre of popular music, though my dictionary describes it as a subculture of big-city teenagers which includes rap, break-dancing, and graffiti. Could this be what replaced my beloved Star 95.5 some months ago?
At any rate, I really must beg to differ with the writer when he claims that the message of the movie 8 Mile is that "you can't step to the mic and be a punk". Though I've not seen this particular example of cinema verite, I have seen Mr. Eminem, accidentally, while changing channels between reruns of News Radio and Frasier, and I can say authoritatively that he is the very embodiment of a punk. Indeed, judging from the irritating noise I sometimes hear spewing from passing motor-vehicles, being a punk is de rigueur in the, er, field of endeavor to which he has applied himself. (I refer here to the crass and infantile narcissism by which the semi-evolved practitioners of the craft attract legions of equally moronic and vulgar fans, not to the distortion-ridden, screw-loosening, high-intensity vibrations emanating from car trunks and attempting to pass as music -- though that is also irritating and consistent with the term "punk", provided that by this one intends "a worthless young hoodlum" and not some more idiomatic usage.)
Does anyone (aside from professional sociologists who are paid to study such phenomena) really care about the inter-group dynamics of this particular element of the lumpenproletariat, whether White or Black? I know I don't, except to berate them as the cultural poison which they are. Good evening.

This, and the column on The homie Will has been far too much. I know, have met, and have held conversations or networked with every last one of the people, except your writers, mentioned in your articles and its quite saddening how they have been talked down upon or dissed by all of this.
After reading every word of all the responses... I think it all comes down to letting these writers do just that, write about it...while all of us that are actually involved or doing it be about it. We are the real that do this and live this. Not some story writer. We know what's up.
It's just another eye trying to give their definition of something they dont live or know nothing about, but construct it to feed a mind of someone who knows nothing of it. I myself am on the frontlines of AZ graffitti. And have been for many years. I bring this up only as an example of course. An example because it's also is given a bad rep, misrepresented, misdefined, etc. when people try and see it from the outside, rather than being a part of or living it/doing it day in and day out or going through the struggles of trying to make state or national attention.
Fubu, Vanilla Ice, Racism, Wigga, White crowd at Blunt Club. So, so sad.
Well done New Times. Write about it.
A'z up...Be About It.
PS-Dad, if you're reading this from Cali, I'm sorry. I'm not gonna be sending you the latest New Times in the mail any longer.

-
GRIME 01/21/2008 6:46:00 AM
I like that the article made me laugh, I did not like that the article did not address any of the points that Karlie or I made, which were that Phoenix is much more diverse than just black/white, and the New Times tried to create tension between two different hip-hop scenes were none previously existed. I'm not sure where the 'Wigga' term fits in, it seems inconsistent to me to argue in one article that the Blunt Club doesn't accept blacks and in the next article that the people at Blunt Club want to be black. Maybe that's because it's two different writers with two different perspectives, but I would assume you guys would want to settle on a position before you criticize anyone else's. Stephen is a good writer, and I have great respect and admiration for the work he does on the 'anti-illegal' movement, but the piece is more of a defense of New Times than a serious response to the criticisms of Niki's article. I agree with many of his points but that's only because he didn't really challenge any of mine. In our interview we both gave a little on our positions but unfortunately none of that made his article, on the other hand I understand that this is a column so it is what it is. Anyway, the respect is mutual Stephen. I also actually have a lot of respect for Niki as well, who has said extremely gracious things about me in the past and has made a good name for herself at New Times. However, I still feel that your article is irresponsible, and the consequences of it are now being felt in our community. Your piece has created several rifts, some of which I can speak on and some I cannot, some which can be resolved with a sit-down and some that cannot. You have to remember that you're writing about hip-hop, and while you might talk about the roots of hip-hop you still lack a real understanding of that community. I commend you for putting the Phoenix Hip-Hop scene on the cover of New Times, but the way you went about it has upset many people, some of whom do not fit so neatly into your Blunt Club VS Groove Candy paradigm, and unfortunately, most of that anger is not being directed at New Times but amongst ourselves in the Phoenix Hip-Hop community. Ironically, while New Times ridicules people for speaking out against the article, those same people are putting in real work to clean up your mess. I'm sure you're working on a new story by now and have moved far beyond Phoenix Hip-Hop, but we have to stay here and do our best to smooth out the rifts that have been created by your mangling of our community. As far as the Blunt Club and Groove Candy are concerned, these two nights have coexisted for several years now without any real problems. There are indeed two scenes in Arizona Hip-Hop, but although they are separate they are not divided. Your article brought animosity and conflict to a community where there was none before, and now your fabrications have manifested into reality. It is a shame really that the media machine has so much power over something as rebellious and independent as underground hip-hop, but when the dust settles I hope this will be a lesson to all of us. Like I said before, Arizona Hip-Hop is much bigger than Blunt Club VS Groove Candy, and so are the problems that have come about because of your article. We will be in the trenches doing our job, I just hope the next time you write about Phoenix Hip-Hop you do yours.
PEACE

You mean mass media... Like this Fucking article? In this Mass Media Newspaper. Your mental gymnastics are a sight to behold.
How many non-whites do they have writting articles at the New Times? Perhaps if the New Times wasn't some Dinosaur of White 1970s liberalism, some fat ass like Lemons might not be calling people white Niggers.

The New Times is the Village Voice Corporation which has a circulation of about 1.8 million. Calling something "alternative" does not mean it is not Mass Media.
I suppose the new definition of alternative thanks to Stephen Lemons is hate of Whites and Niggers

Everybody is under the delusion that white people can't rap or dance. That is a racist assumption, but it's infected the entire society, not just Lemons.
He's been brainwashed by the mass media mind manipulation machine just as much as anyone else.

"Which is the non-racist form of the word."
Total Bullshit.
A white person calling a black person a Nigga gets his ass kicked just as hard.
"Don't get so caught up on people's words... look at their intent."
The Intent was to claim that White People act like Niggers when the rap.
Which begs the question...
Does he hate Whites or Niggers? Or Just whites when they act like Niggers?
"The guy is not a racist... in every back issue I've been reading, he denounces racists and racism"
He feels that by screaming everyone else is a racist he can get away with his own racial prejudice.
-
erik d 01/19/2008 5:09:00 PM
But he didn't say "wigger".
He said "wigga".
As in "what's up my nigga?"
Which is the non-racist form of the word.
Like he said, it was a joke to belittle those people who mistakenly called D'Andrea a racist.
Don't get so caught up on people's words... look at their intent.
Lemon's intent was honorable, even if his way of expressing it was misinterpretated by some.
The guy is not a racist... in every back issue I've been reading, he denounces racists and racism, so cut the man some slack.
-
Feathered Bigot 01/19/2008 4:45:00 PM
Wigger... White + Nigger
The Feathered Bastard hates when white people act like Niggers
The Feathered Bastard thinks only Niggers Rap
The Feathered Bastard therefore thinks White people rapping means White People are acting like Niggers
The Question therefore is does the Feathered Bastard Hate Whites, or does he Hate Niggers?
How many Non-Whites write at the PHOENIX NEW TIMES anyways?
Maybe the Real questions should be why Village Voice Media, would allow this Bigot Feathered Bastard to write this Divisive shit. Who gains by dividing Blacks and Whites up really?

White people cant jump. Or rap. Or dance. Or be true to themselves unless they play guitar for kick-ass rocknroll bands. White people should stay away from pretending that they can produce culture. White people have the role and responsibility of strictly consuming and critiquing culture. They are white-bread control-freak European dorks handicapped by their lack of melatonin. I feel sorry for them. Didn't anybody see Billy Hoyle? He cant slam dunk. He's a wuss that can only make 3 pointer shots. Sidney Deane can slam dunk, that proves it right there.
White men cant jump, or rap.
Repeat after me.
White people cant rap.
Now shut up white rappers and get job at a paper, or something where writing can really come in handy.
Ok, now who wants to send in a cd and perform at the new times hiphop showcase?
Non-whites only.

If, as Lemons claims, blackness is the true measure of real hip hop, and Vanilla Ice was so wack and untalented, then why were most of Vanilla Ice's early fans black?
I'm talking about before he ever got a record deal and before he got huge... most of his fans and concert audiences when he first started out was composed of primarily black people, and they liked him and his music
So, what the fuck kind of bullshit is Lemons and the New Times trying to perpetrate now?

Dont trip. My boy Lem is constanly exposing neo-Nazis and Klans and bigots. Thats why they hate his ass.
New Times and Lem are always standing up to REAL racists like Russell Pearce and Sheriff Joe.
New times fought for MLK day.
New Times fights for the undocumented.
New Times fights against Sheriff Joe.
New times fights KKK and neoNazis.
Lem was defending his coworker. People on Azbeats were calling her racist. He pointed out a lot of people doing this was whyte theyselves. Thats it. And that was true.
Some dont like that he used the word wigga. But I hear lots of yall using the word nigga even when your not black.
The real racists on here dont even know the difference between "nigga," "wigga" and "n*gger."
Lets break it down.
"N*gger" is what white racists use.
"Nigga" is what black folks call themselves sometime.
Yes, "wigga" is a "white nigga," but not a white "n*gger."
A wigga is a phony. If your white and dont want to be a wigga just be real. You can be hiphop, just dont pretend it. Be it.
Keep yo eyes on the REAL racists. They was at Pruitts. They up at Maceualli. they have guns. they want to scare all the Mexicans away. You think these people believe in MLK? In a MLK day? Hell no.
lets lower our voices.
lets think BEFORE we speak.
lets increase the peace.
remember MLK

New Times Staff,
Wow, I see reading comprehension was not your strong point. Let me reiterate what I said since you didn't understand it the first time.
You said "most people here seem to think {Stephen} is a racist." WHERE DID I SAY THAT? Go back, re-read, and then point out the quote to me, as I did not write that quote. In FACT, do a "find" on this page and you'll notice that nowhere in this page other than what you wrote does that quote appear. How did you just attribute a quote to me that I never stated? Certainly you aren't a proofreader are you?
Now... on to the crux of the matter...
"And now I am a racist because you say so? Because I know Stephen? So if you know a bigot, you must be one too? Maybe you are. But I suspect you're just an internet banger with 23 minutes of fame. Live it up brother. You have 14 minutes more."
Are you serious? Go back and again, re-read what I wrote. I clearly stated that you are NOT racist by association. What I said was this:
"And yes, of course I could call you a racist and then the burden of proof lies on you, however, you've done nothing (assuming you aren't Stephen) to show that you are. If I did call you a racist, what basis would I have for it? What Stephen wrote is deliberately racist, you're defending Stephen which makes you racist by association, I rebuke you for being a racist. Was that supposed to be how this played out? Typical straw man argument? Sorry it didn't happen, maybe you'll have better luck next time. Thanks for playing."
Let me reiterate some key footnotes for you Staffer:
1: I COULD call you a racist with no basis, but why? There's no proof that you are on my part.
2: The argument that I used about you defending Stephen is called a "straw man argument." Let me explain. I have an opponent on this subject, which is you. I overstate your position by creating a lie about it and therefore strengthening my position by attributing the fallacy to you. Unfortunately for you, that's what I believe you were trying to do...bait me into an argument. At no time did I say that you are unequivocally a racist, because you have said nothing to prove that you are. My point was very simple and you missed it: You are correct. I can call you a racist and then you have to prove that you are not. I said that I COULD call you a racist. I did NOT call you a racist because I have no basis for it. The only things I've seen from you are in these comments. I have no proof to call YOU a racist. Again, go back, re-read, take in context, and then respond. I was asking you if that scenario is what you had imagined playing out. You obviously tried to bait me and when that didn't work, you attributed a quote to me that I did not state, and then contorted my words out of context. Makes me wonder about the quality of journalism that your magazine produces....

OH MY GOD! Newtimes Staffer... HAVE YOU EVER READ A STEPHEN LEMONS ARTICLE???
ALL HE DOES IS CALL PEOPLE RACIST, NEONAZIS, KKK ETC... THAT IS ALL HE DOES.
That is why Stephen Lemons is the World's Biggest Hypocrite.
By the way... How many Non-white writers write for the New Times??!?
Me thinks its probably about 100% down there.
But then again, singin and dancin is what them black folks do, writing in the big important newspaper is what white folks do, maybe that is why Stephen Lemons hates Wiggers?!

New Times Staffer 01/18/2008 3:25:00 AM
paconaut, You say: "most people here seem to think {Stephen} is a racist." I see the same 12 people commenting over and over again. 498,000 people a month read the New Times, where only 12 post on this blogs. It stands that those who seem to know the least are the ones that know the loudest. Just like you paconaut. And now I am a racist because you say so? Because I know Stephen? So if you know a bigot, you must be one too? Maybe you are. But I suspect you're just an internet banger with 23 minutes of fame. Live it up brother. You have 14 minutes more.

pac0naut 01/18/2008 3:06:00 AM
New Times Staff,
Okay, so you got the "what debate is being sparked here" part of my comment down. Good for you.
Transparent? Really? Was I supposed to be cryptic? Tell me, how do you prove what Stephen wrote is NOT racist? Please explain this to me. You claim I pulled the "racist card". I didn't pull the card, Stephen pulled that card out of the deck himself. Opinion solidified by experience and fact is one thing, talking our of your rear end is another. The main point of contention with Niki's article was that you don't have to uplift one thing by putting down and disrespecting another. I understand Stephen feels the need to defend his colleague...that's respectable. Using the word "wigga" is not.
You don't have to accept my opinion, heck, you don't even have to respect it, but it still remains what most people have written here is what Stephen wrote was racist and not even opinion based. There's no test needed for that. The burden of proof does not rest upon my shoulders, it rests upon Stephen for what he wrote and the verbiage he used as well as the personal insults to Anglo and Karlie. And yes, of course I could call you a racist and then the burden of proof lies on you, however, you've done nothing (assuming you aren't Stephen) to show that you are. Thanks for playing.

Paconuat, I love your type. Transparent you are. The card you use is racist. Call a person a racist. I love it. Smart. Strategic indeed. When a person throws that word out, it forces the receiver of the tort to respond. The proof of not being a racist nows sits on the person you just called a racist. Problem is...how do you prove you aren't a racist? How do you prove you arent a racist (when you arent) without looking like you are a racist trying to prove you arent? Its quite the puzzle. Should Stephen take a race implicit association test? Who's gonna craft it? You? Sure, then he'd would be a racist. Should I craft it so you could call me a racist too? God knows. Let God figure that out. In the meantime, think what you will. I respect your opinion, but I do not accept it. Best to you, New Times Staffer.

I call B.S. I refer you to exhibit 1a:
"Is that Ill Al the Anglo Saxon? Close, its Jamie Kennedy from Malibus Most Wanted."
Exhibit 1b:
"This, despite the fact "Anglo" looks like he and K-Fed share the same gene pool."
Spark debate? Does Stephen even KNOW Anglo? Listened to his music? Know his history? Anything? Where's the thought? Comparing Anglo to Jamie Kennedy...where's the thought? That's a flat out attack.
Exhibit 2:
Calling Karlie "Hustlamanian." Are you kidding? Sorry, that's blatantly racist. What debate were we sparking again here?
"Pretenders"? I don't need to know Stephen to know that he knows absolutely nothing about hiphop. I also don't need to know him to know that he's a racist.

first of all this article is just a man acting childish. calling other white people wiggas and dissing a scene they were just promoting. New times has never had good coverage with hip hop in az. blunt club was the only thing promoted for a long time like these people never go to the city. Az hip hop is getting bigger and it pains me to see that not one latino was mentioned in az. The first hip hop artists to get full play on the radio nbk and the hottest latin group out in az sol camp. Wow. Then again I didnt really think the first one was bad but the follow up was just wrong

at the end of the day nerves were struck on both side.......its obvious that for such a scene that is heavily criticized.....people are paying attention.....and for such a publication to go as far as false screen names and visit azbeats with repeated sarcasm and insults doesnt demonstrate anymore professionalism than those who were offended.......truth of the matter is although the context directed towards anglo was out of line......it only raises the curiosity of those who dont know him.......like wow who is this guy that got the new times calling him names .....makes the paper look more like the aggressor.....good and bad has both come from the article..abit more bad than good......but a negative can always be reversed.....fact of the matter is hip hop (be it white, latin, or black) is here in arizona and its only gonna continue to grow.......the scene may have lost the first battle but the war is far from over......and its repeated insults from the media that fuels the passion of these artists even more......1 thing is for sure, the scene has found New Times (WEAK SPOT) and thats criticism.....cause anytime you can make a journalist/writer direct his focus on you (when he thinks less of you to begin with) when there are so many other stories to capture......you have truly delivered a pivotal blow to the machine and for that i take my hat off to both Anglo and Grime...as well as Karlie.........

Caveman 23 01/17/2008 10:21:00 PM
Recent Article In New Times?
So easy to read a Caveman could do it...
Seriously folks, I just wanted to get my opinion in.
As a Caveman, I have personally witnessed the racial institutions here Az. It's not everyday, but mostly every few days, I get the usual "Go Back to the Ice Age you HOMOsapien!" yelled at me from a street light. In fact, just the other day, at Circle K, I was buying a 6 pack of Heineken - the clerk looked at me and asked - "would you like a lighter, too?" And then he giggled uncontrolably. I said "yeah dude, real funny -maybe if it was 12,000 years ago"....
As far back as I can remember - what has been largely unaddressed has been the caveman's mentality, demeanor and ethics. You don't see me screaming about my race outlasting dinosaurs, and how we invented cave art, do you? Why doesn't New Times give ME the time of day? Boy would I love to see a Caveman dawning the front of a New Times cover! (get it, "Dawning")
See, and that is the other thing, we are funny too.
Another misconception most people mistakenly believe my intelligence was sub-par but this cannot be judged fairly by modern-day standards either. Intelligence is about fulfilling needs... resourcefulness.
And boy are we resourceful! For instance, If there were to be an apocalypse, and mankind ran out of food - I would be the first to cook the dog or cat. You wouldn't.
Take a good look in the mirror people. That attitude of yours? We created!
That great idea of yours you had earlier today? Done. We thought of that 6,687 years ago.
My point is this, these posts remind me of when I lived in a time of Anarchy. Quick movements cause alarm and an instinctual reaction.
Depending on an individuals past experiences with strangers dictated how they would normally react under stress. This is EXACTLY what is happening. What are you guys high? Are you a bunch of "Stone Agers"?
Seriously, I should run for president. Caveman in 08'. Do you think New Times would endorse such a smart, hairy, and bumpy foreheaded man? Call me what you will - you could even call me a 'WIGGAMAN' if you wanted. Because guess what, I already thought of that term in 10,000 B.C. The only problem is that I couldn't talk yet...LOL!
It's cool. I will survire your prejudice.
For at least another 12 billion years.
Enjoy the fires. In the meantime, I have a cat to eat. Ta-Ta!

Great job New Times. The funny thing is, The Pigeo....errr, The Bir....errrr, Stephen Lemming.....errrrrrrrrrr Stephen Lemons is always calling out other people for being racist, and deservedly so. He does a good job at it and I don't think I've gone but a few articles where he doesn't reference the initials KKK. However, in one swift move, Stephen lifted his skirt and showed us his "little Hitler". I haven't heard the word "wigga" used since around 1994. It's now 2008. Are we still THAT backward in this state? Amazing. If you read the comments, Anglo hit it right on the head with the New Times endorsement of the word "nigga". Sorry Stephen, you just outed yourself. So remember, if you like hiphop and you're white, then you're a wigga. If you like hiphop and you're black, well..............
Hey, the New Times said it, not I.

Dear Karlie Hustle,
I'm disappointed that you felt you had to resort to derogatory, low-blow comments about me because you feel you/the scene/whatever was misrepresented in my story. I still have our interview tape, if you'd care to hear what you said for yourself. I would be hurt by your comment that I look "45," except that 1) I know it's not true; I still get carded for cigarettes, and 2) Insults only hurt me when they come from people I respect. And I have no respect for you whatsoever anymore.

Firstly, I'm a grown man. I grew up in Central Phoenix and have lived all over Phoenix. I got into hip-hop while attending Simpson Elementary in the 80s. I was then as I am now very hearsed in hip-hop history and appreciate all contributions.
My friends are a very mixed group of racial backgrounds. I don't pretend to be black or any other race. I'm just me. I speak and dress I suppose one would say very much like your average white guy.
I have love for all races and cultures that very much includes the confines of hip-hop as well.
I did not call for a picket of the New Times. I suggested a boycott possibly. You'd be surprised at the more official political entities that are considering action at this point.
It's not just ArizonaBeats.com that is keeping up with this.
-
Russell G. 01/17/2008 7:31:00 PM
Some Latinos have made contributions to hiphop. Few whites have. Lest you count their money. Go read some history.
The word wigga was used for the purpose of calling out white boys pretending to be black. It has its place as a descriptor. This Ill Al has been calling for boycotts, pickets, calling Dandreas article racist. As a black man, I find this laughable. Where did you grow up, son? Paradise Valley?
If whites or Latinos want to use African beats and call themselves hiphop, at least acknowledge the source. Otherwise you are as bad as Pat Boone ripping off Little Richard.
Take a look at that D.L. Hughley quote Al. When the cops do roll up and we are standing side by side, one of us is going to be treated different than the other. And that is real, my little white brother.

Anthony Birle 01/17/2008 7:21:00 PM
EVERYONE! This entire forum is silly. New Times writes point-of-view articles. Big deal. They wrote stuff that you interpret one way. For every single person that sees it one way, another sees it differently. None of us ever see the same color red (or read the same thing from a single article). It is all based on OUR OWN POINT OF VIEW. Move on. The other millions of New Times reads like me have. Good luck to all.

Koncept 01/17/2008 7:15:00 PM
You do realize that Karlie's Armenian heritage qualifies her as a "Person of Color", right? If you knew anything about her you would know that the first time she went on the air out here she stated that she's Armenian very clearly.
Seriously though, The Bird is showing a serious case of ignorance here. No one uses the term "wigga/wigger" anymore. It lasted about a year or so back around '95.
The attacks on Ill Al shows how petty you guys can be. This isn't "Magazine style journalism" as you put it, this was borderline tabloid writing. The article in question did not give a clear, honest view of the rap scene out here. It brought up two nights, divided them by race, and tried to stir up beef between rappers. There is no "black" or "white" scene; there's a hip hop scene out here. No mention was made of the Latino/Hispanic rappers out here, which I find suprising considering that MC Magic and his old group NB Ridaz have both hit various Billboard charts.
The article could have been more thorough in it's presentation. What started out as a being a good look for valley rappers ended up stirring up a lot of shit in the end.
Comb through www.metrotimes.com to see how it's done. Local rappers there always got shine. It's 2008, time to catch up New Times.

ROK 01/17/2008 7:14:00 PM
I too initially read this "rant" last night and was taken completely by surprise. It is unfortunate that a publication like the New Times would allow something of this nature to be written by someone on their staff and worse yet posted on their website. Yes we are all allowed freedom of speech but that liberty has been taken too far. The use of the term "wigga" is incredibly racist considering where the word originates. As someone who reads the New Times frequently I am very disappointed in what I have read. Furthermore the nature in which this "rant" was written was I'm sure intended to come off as a joke. Unfortunately race, racial slurs and the like are not something to be used as jokes. Is this the message the New Times wants to get across to its readers?

ILL AL 01/17/2008 6:59:00 PM
I don't care what this person's opinion is concerning me. I don't mind taking heat for standing up for what I believe is right. There were no valid points made so I can't retort to any. All he did was attempt to stereo type me by race (pretty much what this whole thing was started over) and he makes fun of me. Big deal, so to that I have nothing to say other then I feel as though Karlie Hustle, GRIME and myself have all been more then professional about voicing our opinions however in-your-face they may be. The New Times responded with name calling and racial slurs.
This brings me to my only issue with this nonsensical response from The New Times.
In the original article, AZ hip-hop veteran Roca Dolla makes an important statement about the reason why Arizona has been skipped over by the hip-hop music industry.
Roca Dolla said, "When the record labels first started looking for more hip-hop artists, Evan Mecham was the governor here, and he opposed a Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and that made a lot of people angry. We should have been on the map years ago, but because of politics, we were kind of blackballed from the industry."
Now, only days away from Martin Luther King Jr. Day (that thank God we do honor here in Phoenix now) we have The New Times printing outright racial slurs. If you read the response from New Times writer then I know you are already shocked. He repeatedly uses the term, "wigga".
For those that may not know what that means, it means White or Wannabe N**ga. He's outright saying that every white rapper in Arizona...and by his own definition, every white rapper that isn't Eminem...is a "wigga".
So I ask him this. If I am a "Wigga" because I'm white and make hip-hop music / partake in hip-hop's culture...then what are you calling African-American people that do the same?
...don't like that do you...didn't think about that did you?
When you use the term "Wigga" you are dropping and condoning the use of the "N" word in the same breath.
The term "wigga" is something racist or ignorant people use to dub white people who partake in hip-hop culture...and it IS in direct offense to both white and black people.
...right, nice one "the bird". People who don't hold racist beliefs can say very racist things. I think that's what is happening here. It's called irresponsible.
Hip-Hop was founded by African Americans, Puerto Ricans, whites and other races. That's what makes hip-hop so great is that it's something we are all involved in and have been since the beginning.
In conclusion, the whole point was that AZ hip-hop artists should be acknowledged for their accomplishments and not by them being the "enter race here, rapper" who finally took AZ national...even if that's the case.
The controversy These New Times writers have tried to create in order to generate views and move papers was through racial division. I'm glad that hasn't worked. Everyone I know involved in AZ hip-hop is proud of Willy Northpole and who ever else makes it to that level...so in the end The New Times ends up just looking like..."the dumb ass" as you so eloquently put it.
PS: Thanks for shinning some light on AZ hip-hop though. For that part I do thank you.

I've had a night to sleep on this, and I've discovered the real issue here. It seems New Times was upset to find out I'm not half black post-print on the "Raising Terrazona" article. After all, it messed up the credibility of the "real black rap scene" argument they went so hard for. Sorry to disappoint you guys. I was never asked in the original article about my racial composition, but I was sitting there plain as day looking not black in front of the reporter and the camera crew. You printed a photo of me. My flicks are all over the Power web site and MySpace. I'm in the community looking not black on the regular.

Mc Einstein, I totally understand what you are saying. I have studied such things for years. For example, I once studied the corrilation between stupid, self serving hip-hop scenesters and the size of an east indian hippo. For example, some scenesters are so fat with silly thought that if a doctor diagnosed them with a flesh eating disease, they would have 100 years to live. Kinda like a hippo. The math says they have a 110% chance of remaining dumb and a .001% chance of hitting the 100% chance of chance. The math says it all.

First of all, The branch of "Rap" developed in the first part of the 20th century that was highly successful in explaining the behavior of whites, blacks (and all races) developed between 1900 and 1930 AND combined with the general and special theory of relativity, it revolutionized the field of Hip Hop. The new concepts, which were the particle properties of radiation, the wave properties of matter, quantization of physical properties and the idea that one can no longer know exactly where a single rapper such as "Willy" is at any one instance were necessary to explain all of the new experimental evidence that was available at the time. For example, quantum mechanics explains the behavior of semiconductors which are used to make the myriad of devices we use every day. Hip Hip is much the same. Isn't it all making sense yet?
For those who don't know - Quantum field theory is the study of the quantum mechanical interaction of elementary particles and fields. Quantum field theory applied to the understanding of HIP HOP is called quantum electrodynamics (QED) - huh, sounds like a great rapper name, and it has proved spectacularly successful in describing the interaction of light skin & dark skin with matter. The calculations, however, are often complex. They are usually carried out with the aid of Feynman diagrams (named after American physicist Richard P. Feynman - who was white, in case anybody cares), simple graphs that represent possible variations of interactions and provide an elegant shorthand for precise mathematical equations that could be translated to Down Tempo/Hip Hop Beats/Record Scratching/etc.. Quantum field theory applied to the understanding of the strong interactions between quarks and between protons, neutrons, and other baryons and mesons is called quantum chromodynamics (QCD) - another great rapper name; QCD has a mathematical structure similar to that of QED.
Does anyone catch my drift??
