Finally! Phoenix New Times gets themselves a "Messican" writer. What? They've had them before? Who? Tony Ortega? He might have has a taco sauce sounding name, but he was as Mexican as a Teriyaki shrimp wrap! Oh, wait there was this "chica" back in the late nineties, but she was lame. One of those "Mexican culture from my gated community view" sort of writer. Welcome vato! And spice-it-up a little, will ya?

In the 60s, I grew up outside Edwards Air Force Base, a halfbreed offspring of a Yaqui-Mexican mother and a Grapes-of-Wrath father, and got my mouth washed out with soap and knuckles wrapped for speaking my "first" language -- Spanish -- in First Grade at the school in Somis, Calif.

That was the case for most in my generation -- the language that made us "Americans" was scorned and scorched to death.

It wasn't until midlife that I finally tossed my cultural embarrassment aside and embraced my heritage, only to be dismayed by the current debates over English-only and border wars.

Now I know why a passionate Frenchman in Paris burned down a McDonald's restaurant a few years ago -- the fast-food joint was the utter embodiment of American imperialism -- and imperialism is what has ruined multiple cultures around the world -- from India to Africa to the Middle East.

We need to be more like a Latino version of Star Trek -- Do No Harm, Leave Civilization s We Encounter Untouched and Unscathed.
